Ralph Cloninger
Ralph Elliott Cloninger, 81, of 3305 Philadelphia Church Road, died May 28, 2004. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed with a DAV graveside service at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of the Flying Tigers in WWII, DAV American Legion and VFW and was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret C. Cloninger of Lincolnton; a son, Jeff Cloninger of Lincolnton; three daughters, Rebecca Bailes, Sherry Heavner and June Loftin all of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Betty Wood
VALE — Betty Beal Wood, 75, of 1691 Cat Square Road, died May 28, 2004. Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Daniel’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was retired from First Citizen Bank.
Survivors include a sister, Elma Schrum of Lincolnton and two nieces.

Darrell Wilson
William Darrell Wilson Sr., 60, of 726 Landers Chapel Road, died May 29, 2004. Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenters Funeral Home. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Eaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Born in Gaston County, he was a member of Leonard’s Ford Baptist Church and retired from Metromont Materials.
Survivors include two sons, William Wilson Jr. of Lincolnton and James Wilson of Bessemer City; a sister, Carolyn Russell of Crouse; a brother, Glenn Wilson of Cherryville and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Wilson, Michael Wilson, James Mosley III, Justin Mosley, April Mosley and Zeke Wilson.

Bill Upchurch
CHERRYVILLE — William Oliver Upchurch, 79, of 202 Roy Eaker Road, died May 29, 2004. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, he was owner of Upchurch Garden Centery and Mobile Home park, a member of the Rotary Club, Shriner’s and American Legion Post 100.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Mae Wells Upchurch; a daughter, Mary Ferguson of Cherryville; a son, William Upchurch of Cherryville and seven grandchildren, Matthw Ferguson, Alex Ferguson, Susan Ferguson, John Ferguson, Will Upchurch, Luke Upchurch and Dan Upchurch.

SHELBY — Robert E. Dawkins, 60, of 603 E. Graham St., died May 29, 2004.

Evelyn Reeves Smith, 77, of 2775 Philadelphia Church Road, died May 29, 2004.

Nellie Ballard
IRON STATION — Nellie S. Ballard, 90, of 1155 Mt. Zion Church Road, died May 28, 2004. Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Floyd Ballard of Mt. Holly, Bub Ballard of Lincolnton and David Ballard of Iron Station; three daughters, Martha Mize of Alexis, Lorene Ward of Iron Station and Alice White of Hickory; three sisters, Corene Jones and Willie Little both of Iron Station and Nancy Freeman of Boger City; a number of grandchildren, step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and a great great-grandchild.

Marion Cherry
DENVER — Marion Malynda Gabriel Cherry, 82, of North Hwy. 16, died May 29, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Unity Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville.
Born in Catawba County, she was a homemaker and a former teacher at Thomasboro Elementary School.
Survivors include two sons, Alfred Cherry of Denver and Ernie Cherry of Winston Salem; three daughters, Virginia Dellinger of Denver, Malynda Hollar of Catawba and Sharon Reddick of Greensboro; a brother, Orland Gabriel Jr. of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren, Weston Lockman, Tobey Ward, Gabe Dellinger, Josh Cherry, Camie Dellinger, Jake Hollar, Neeley Dellinger, Megan Hollar, Miranda Reddick, Anna Reddick, Matthew Cherry and Kelsey Cherry and three great-grandchildren.

NEWTON — Patricia Pugh, 48, of Laffon Road, died May 30, 2004.

Henry Becker
VALE — Henry L. Becker, 87, of 2858 Cansler Road, died May 30, 2004. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Born in New York City, NY, he was a retired master toolmaker.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine Joan Doucette Becker of the home; a daughter, Barbara Fracaro of Vale; two grandchildren, Julie Blankenship and Phillip Fracaro Jr. and two great-grandchildren.

Everette Wilkinson
Mr. Everette Blair Wilkinson, age 87 of 5678 King Wilkinson Road in Denver, NC died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Lincoln Nursing Center.
His funeral was held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Jones and Rev. Ken Gibson officiating. The body laid in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilkinson was born on March 29, 1917 in Lincoln county to the late Everette and Zanie Dellinger Wilkinson. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church since 1939 where he served as deacon, Sunday School director and teacher. He was employed in the early fifties as a timber buyer for McClure Lumber Co. Later he worked for the state of NC as parole and probation officer, then became a hearing officer for western NC until his retirement in 1982. For the many years of dedicated service, he was awarded North Carolinas Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He served as county commissioner from 1946 to 1950, was on the Lincoln County School Board in the fifties and also the board of trustees for the planning and construction of the Lincoln County Hospital from 1966 to 1970. He was instrumental in organizing the Pumpkin Center Community Building and served as a trustee. He also served the local area as Notary Public for many years., He was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County and loved serving his community.
Survivors include: wife, Zellie B. Wilkinson of the home; one son, Rodney Wilkinson of Denver, NC; one daughter, Pauline Phillips of Sophia, NC; one sister, Leila W. Hager of Lowesville, NC; three grandsons, Dale Wilkinson, David Wilkinson of Denver, NC, Michael Deaton of Shelby, NC; two granddaughters, Cindy Lambert of Shelby, NC, Alisa Phillips of Sophia, NC; three great-grandchildren.

Ralph Cloninger
Mr. Ralph Elliott Cloninger, age 81 of 3305 Philadelphia Ch. Rd. in Lincolnton, NC died Friday, May 28, 2004.
His funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 30 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Jarrell and Dr. Charles Cranford officiating. Burial followed with a DAV graveside service at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Mr. Cloninger was born on April 6, 1923 in Lincoln County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Eusbie Garrison Cloninger and three brothers, Jim, Ken and Frank Cloninger. He was a member of the Flying Tigers in WWII, a member of DAV, American Legion and VFW and was Veteran of the Year in 1999. He worked in the textile industry, retiring after 30 years with Burlington. Mr. Cloninger was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Survivors include: wife, Margaret C. Cloninger of Lincolnton, NC; one son, Jeff Cloninger of Lincolnton, NC; three daughters, Rebecca Bailes, Sherry Heavner and June Loftin of Lincolnton, NC; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.
