Dr. Jack Clayton Robinson
Dr. Jack Clayton Robinson passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2012 surrounded by family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and caring friend to many. He lived his life with dignity and kindness and will be missed by all who knew him. Jack was born October 1, 1928, in Clover, S.C., to Robah L. Robinson and Myrtle Biggers Robinson.
Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Chastain Robinson; daughter Elizabeth and husband Ralph Abernethy III; son, Cary Robinson and wife Leslie; two grandchildren, Megan and Michael Lawing; and brother, Hugh Robinson and wife, Jane and their children and grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Robah L. Robinson Jr. and his wife Josephine.
Jack grew up on a cotton farm and learned the meaning of hard work at an early age. He was an avid tennis player and mentored many young men while acing them on the court, earning him the nickname “The Silver Fox.” He and his wife enjoyed camping at the beach, traveling, and most of all spending time with family and friends in his beloved Banner Elk.
Jack graduated Clover High School, Lees McRae College, King College, Columbia Theological Seminary, and received his Doctorate in 1975 from McCormick Theological Seminary.
After graduation from Columbia Theological Seminary, Jack spent two years as a home missionary in Eastern Kentucky where he served four churches. His other pastorates were Silver Creek Presbyterian Church, West Avenue Presbyterian Church, and Unity Presbyterian Church.
After retiring from the pastorate he served as Director of Alumni Affairs at Lees McRae College.
During his career Jack served as Area Board Chairman of Gaston Lincoln Area Mental Health Program and was instrumental in founding East Lincoln Christian Ministry. He also served as a Board Member on the Lincoln County American Red Cross Council, was leader of Gaston Area Presbyterian Inter Church Council, and was an active member of the Presbytery and Synod.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 at West Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1015 West Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28052 with Rev. Dr. Will Terry officiating. The family also welcomes visits to the home today.

Betty Jean Parker Hendricks
CHERRYVILLE — Betty Jean Parker Hendricks, 74, of Hilldale St., died July 19, 2012 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
She was born on May 10, 1938 in Hayesville, a daughter of the late Lyle and Montree Parker Parker. Betty was a homemaker and a proud mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a sister, Willamae Hogsed and a brother Tommy Parker.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years Jerry Hendricks; daughter, Debbie A. Suttles of Lincolnton; two sons, Dwayne Spivey of Cherryville and Chris Hendricks and wife Melissa of Cherryville, three sisters, Madge Champion of Lincolnton, Lillian Edwards of Hiawasse, Ga. and Azzlee Ledford of Hayesville; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Faulkenberry officiating with burial to follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at other times at the home.

Alpha Mae Heavner
CHERRYVILLE — Alpha Mae Heavner, 93, of 111 Harrelson Road, formerly of Crouse Rd., died July 17, 2012 at Carolina Care Center.
She was born on May 1, 1919 in Gaston County a daughter of the late Grover and Bessie Beattie Dellinger.
Mrs. Heavner was a member of the First Baptist Church and was retired from B.C. Moores.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Luther Vance Heavner and a sister Margaret Dixon.
Survivors include her daughter Paula Elmore and husband Carroll of Crouse; son, Norman Heavner and wife Loretta of Lincolnton; grandchildren, David Heavner, Norman Heavner Jr. and Roger Heavner all of Lincolnton and Whitney Hanke of Crouse; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. David Day officiating with burial to follow in Leonard’s Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.

CROUSE — Marie McMurry Cantrell Weiss, age 87, of 970 Old Lincolnton-Crouse Road in Crouse, died on July 17, 2012.
Her funeral service will be 4 p.m. today in theWarlick Funeral HomeChapel with Rev. Pauline Coffey and Rev. Nathan Grooms officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Ms. Weiss was born September 30, 1924 in Lincoln County to the late Albert Yancy and Macie Carter McMurry. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Aaron Cantrell and a grandson, Scotty Dellinger. Ms. Weiss was a retired minister of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Lincolnton.
She is survived by four sons, Kenneth A. Cantrell and wife Diane of Crouse, Walter M. Cantrell and wife Peggy, Eddie D. Cantrell and wife Barbara, all of Lincolnton, and Tony B. Cantrell and wife Penny of Vale; three daughters, Joann C. Riffle and husband Bud of Lincolnton, Sandra C. Wright of home, and Robin W. Jenkins and husband Dale of Crouse; one sister, Martha Armstrong of Lincolnton; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
