Wilbur Hallman
TEXAS — Wilbur Purvie Hallman, 96, died May 5, 2004. Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at Restland Wildwood Chapel. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.
He was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Survivors include his wife, Berta Emily Nix Hallman; two daughters, Nancy Cason of Garland and Betty Hoover of Kemp, Texas; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Stella Carpenter
CHERRYVILLE — Stella Jane Clark Carpenter, 89, of 6406 Hwy. 182, died May 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three children, Brenda Boozer of Whitmire, SC, Bob Carpenter of Cherryville and Libba Wells of Hillsborough; five grandchildren, Bobby Carpenter, Mary Jones, Peter Wells, Mark Wells and David Boozer; three step-grandchildren, Tammy Smith, Cindy Martin and Becky Smith; two great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.

Carrie Helms
STANLEY — Carrie Daisey Helms, 83, of Stanley Total Living Center, died May 12, 2004. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today at Reepsville Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Stanley Total Living Center, 514 Old Mt. Holly Road, Stanley, NC 28164.

Jennifer Hedrick
Jennifer Elaine Workman Hedrick, 45, of 1737 Amy Drive, died May 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Born in Elkins, W.Va., she worked in the textile industry and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley Hedrick of the home; a daughter, Karen Ashe of Lincolnton; her mother, Helen Workman of Elkins, W.Va.; four sisters, Joyce Workman of Elkins, W.Va., Debbie Schuchant of McSherry Town, Pa., Pamela Daniels of Elkins, W.Va. and Kathryn Workman of West Palm Beach, Fla. and two brothers Miles Workman of Roanoke, Va. and Myles Workman of Lincolnton.

Montez Sparks
DENVER — Montez Scott Sparks, 81, died May 12, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Westport Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Born in Andrews, she was a business teacher at Buncombe High School and Independence High School, was a registrar at the Asheville-Biltmore College and was a member of Andrews Baptist Church, Mars Hill Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Baptist Church and Westport Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Homer Sparks; a son, Larry Sparks of Sante Fe, New Mexico; a daughter, Linda Francese of Cowans Ford and two grandsons, Brent Francese and David Francese.

Lee Costner
Lee Louis Costner, 79, of 308 Baxter Road, died May 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Carpenters Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a retired mailed carrier with the US Postal service, farmer and carpenter and a WWII U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Davis Costner; two sons, Dennis Costner and Jerry Costner both of Cherryville; four daughters, Ruth Causby, Linda Sweezy and Ann Barrett all of Cherryville and Darlene Goforth of Watertown, NY; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Alta Jackson
Alta Frances Wingate Jackson, 89, of Cardinal Health Care, died May 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Born in Lincoln County, she was retired from General Shoelace and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Garnell Jackson of Riverdale, Ga. and JOHn Muhammad of High Point; six daughters, Bessie Byrd, Casmir Bell, Natalie Jackson all of Lincolnton, Robenia Greene of New York, NY, Barbara LaSalle of Charlotte and Laevannah Washington of Forestville, Md.; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.

Lester Bynum
SHELBY — Lester “Fat” Bynum, 86, of 211 N. Morgan St., Apt. B6, died May 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tucker’s Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Mohican Mills, was a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Glover Bynum; five sons, Walter Glover and Jake Bynum both of Shelby, Benjamin Bynum of Lincolnton, Larry Bynum of Charlotte and Everette Bynum of Kings Mountain; six daughters, Corrine Camp, Maxine Bynum, Donnie Thompson, Gloria Byrd all of Shelby, Johnnie Bynum of Kings Mountain and Dorothy Bynum of Gastonia; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mildred McKee Lander, 78, of 133 Hollybrook Avenue, died May 12, 2004.

M. Whisnant
MAIDEN — Margaret Elizabeth Whisnant, 82, of East Maiden Road, died May 14, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at East Maiden Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Lawings Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.
She was born in Catawba County
Survivors include three nieces and a nephew.
