Two members of the Lincolnton Lady Wolves’ tennis team qualified for the state tournament to be held next week at the Cary Tennis Center. Shawn Kindley and Jessica Newton received a No. 4 seed in the 2A West Regional Tournament and played up to their billing.
The duo beat Ashe Co. 6-2, 6-2 and then defeated Pisgah 6-0, 6-3. On Saturday, due to rain, Kindley/Newton faced the No. 1 team in the state from Wilkes Central. They lost in straight sets.
On Friday, Liz Rhine faced No. 3 seed Elin Arnaudin from Brevard—a two-time state qualifier. Rhine lost in straight sets, but her coach Chris Hoffman was proud of her effort.
The doubles’ team of Angela Graham and Shelley Stevens were ousted by Ashe County’s No. 1 double team 6-2, 7-5. Hoffman was pleased with their play.
“They put up a gallant fight, but it just wasn’t enough,†he said.
Hoffman believed the regionals went pretty well, and is looking forward to the state tournament.
“We had a very positive experience and look forward to being represented in the state tournament,†he said.
West Lincoln’s team of LeeAnna Young and Nicol Mick made it past the first round with a straight-set win over Brevard, but lost in their second round matchup.
