Merle Powell
CHERRYVILLE — Merle Leatherman Powell, 79, of 604 Rosewood Lane, died Aug. 13, 2004. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethphage Lutheran Church, where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a retired teacher in the Cherryville Area Schools.
Survivors include two daughters, Lori Saine of Lincolnton and Juan Huffstetler of Cherryville; two sons, Michael Powell and Jeff Powell both of Cherryville; eight grandchildren, Katie Powell, John Powell, Ben Powell, Caroline Powell, Will Saine, Henry Saine, Tripp Huffstetler and Alice Ann Huffstetler; a great-grandchild and five sisters, Inez Hull of Hickory, Hazel Howell, Edity Boyles and Dorothy Baxter all of Cherryville and Edna Huffstetler of Lincolnton.

Billie Reel
VALE — Billie McGinnis Reel, 73, of 5444 May Bank Lane, died Aug. 14, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 today at the funeral home.
Born in Gaston County, she was the former owner of Rock A By Daycare.
Survivors include her husband, Wilford Reel of the home; two daughters, Doris Sain of Maiden and Kathy Sanders of Vale; six brothers, Frank McGinnis of Cherryville, Glenn McGinnis of Charlotte, Don McGinnis of Lexington, Ky., J.R. McGinnis of Gastonia, Dan McGinnis and Bob McGinnis both of Lincolnton; two sisters, Mary Noles of Sherrills Ford and Sue Moss of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Aliceia Atkinson, Jerry Sain, James Sain and Michael Reel and three great-grandchildren.

Nell Quates
VALE — Mary “Nell†Carver Quates, 72, died Aug. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hulls Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Baldwin County, Ala., she was retired from Carolina Care Center in Cherryville.
Survivors include two sons, David Quates of the home and Brent Quates of Charlotte; a brother, Joseph Carver of Texas; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

NEWTON — Jean Arnold Pate, 66, of Rome Jones Road, died Aug. 14, 2004. A private graveside service and burial will be held at St. Paul Memorial Park.
Born in Damascus, Va., he served in the National Guard and U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Pate of the home; two sons, Reggie Pate of Decatur, Ga. and Derek Pate of Farmville; a daughter, Ginger Pate of Winston-Salem; three brothers, James Pate of Lenoir, Jack Pate of Fayetteville and Grady Pate of Lincolnton; five sisters, Peggy Johnson of Lenoir, Myrtle Gilehrist of Columbia, SC, Leona Lynch of Conover, Margaret Berry of Maiden and Marsha Simpson of Newton and a granddaughter, Allyson Pate.

Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Millville, NJ, he was retired from Vermont American Manufacturing as President, a member of the Lincolnton Fire Department, the Lincolnton Rotary Club and Antique Car Club.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Turner Henderson of the home; two sons, Hollis Henderson Jr. and Sonny Henderson of Lincolnton; four daughters, Ann Ebert of Advance, Barbara Rushing of Charlotte, Belva Baxter of Mt. Pleasant and Mary Morris of Elfland; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Charles and Marsha Ebert, Stephanie and Rob Rock, Ricky Rushing, Travis and Latissa Baxter, Joshua and Jill Baxter, Micah Baxter, Cammy Baxter, Ginger Henderson and Colt Henderson and three great-grandchildren.
