Douglas Hugh Hager

DENVER — Mr. Douglas Hugh Hager, age 67, of Campground Road in Denver, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Arnold Douthit and Rev. Larry Cooley officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. this evening, August 2, 2017, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Hager was born February 16, 1950, in Gaston County, to Elliott Boone Hager and the late Helen Abernathy Hager. He retired from Duke Energy where he worked as an electrician.  He also had retired from the Denver Fire Department where he was a volunteer fireman.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Brandon Hager of the home; his children, Jason Hager, and wife Dana, of Leesburg, Ga., Angelia Roley of Bay Minette, Ala., Roger Hager, and wife Velvet, of Denver, and April Hager of the home; his father, Elliott Hager of Sherrills Ford; a brother, Steve Hager, and wife Dianne, of Sherrills Ford; and four grandchildren, Savannah Roley, Jake Hager, Liberty Hager, and J.C. Hager.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the DFL Ministry of Mountain View Baptist Church, 5045 E. Maiden Road, Maiden, NC 28650.

James “Rip” Edward Childers 

CHERRYVILLE — James “Rip” Edward Childers, age 54, of Hwy. 274 N. Cherryville passed away Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Carolina Health Care Systems Blue Ridge.

He was born in Cherokee County, S.C. on May 19, 1963 a son of the late George Washington and Helen Rose Childers. Rip was employed at the Lakewood Care Center as Med Tech supervisor. He attended Bess Chapel United Methodist Church. He found great pleasure in camping, carp fishing, and was an excellent pool player. He was attracted to the outdoors and taking care of his donkey, “Jack” and his chickens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vina Medley.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Becky Beam Childers; siblings, Eddie Childers (Pam) of Belwood, Zach Childers of Gaffney, S.C., Annette Parris (Charles) of Spartanburg, and Glendy Bolin (Wayne) of Gaffney; uncle, Dennis Rose of Gaffney; his toy poodle, Diesel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, August 2, 2017 at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bill Taylor and Rev. Randi Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church today from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. and at other times at the home.

Arthur Frank McGinnis, Sr. 

STANLEY — Arthur Frank McGinnis, Sr., 91, died peacefully on July 29, 2017 at the Stanley Total Living Center.

He was born in Lincoln County, son of the late Marvin F. and Laura Mae Lawing McGinnis, and was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Beach McGinnis; a brother, Reid McGinnis; two sisters, Faye Bean and Katherine Lewis; and a grandson, Jordan Thomas McGinnis.

He served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean War, was a retired warehouse supervisor with J.P. Stevens in Stanley, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Stanley, and was a member of Stanley Masonic Lodge #713 and the Lincolnton Masonic Lodge #137, where he served as Past Master of both Lodges.

Survivors include two sons, Frank McGinnis and wife Debbie of Denver, Rev. Dr. Tom McGinnis and wife Heather of Raleigh; two brothers, Jim McGinnis of Stanley, Gary McGinnis and wife Terry of Stanley; a sister, Ruby Fisher and husband Roger of Stanley; grandchildren, Heather Hicks and husband Bryant, Jessica McGinnis, Jeremy McGinnis and fiancée Amanda Cronick, Patrick McGinnis and wife Christy, Billy McGinnis and wife Christie, Jennifer McLeod and O’Brien Taylor; great grandchildren, Aiden and Dalton McGinnis, Jeremiah and Faith McGinnis; step great grandchildren, Wade and Aaron Hicks.

A funeral service conducted by Reverend Dr. Dennis Benton, Reverend Jason Ballard, and Reverend Dr. Tom McGinnis will be held 2:30 p.m. today, August 2, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Stanley. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Other times the family will be at the home of Heather Hicks, 1108 Mauney Rd. in Shelby. Interment with military honors provided by the Gaston County Honor Guard will follow in Hillcrest Gardens.

Archie Leroy McManus

Archie Leroy McManus, age 74, of Ike Lynch Road in Dallas, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hardin with Pastor Jonathan Schnibben officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. McManus was born January 21, 1943, in York County, S.C., to the late Julius Lee McManus, Jr. and Alma Thatcher McManus. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, June Starnes, and a brother, Julius Lee McManus, III. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Bennington, and then later worked as a printer.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Pasour McManus of the home; two daughters, Kelley McManus Barker, and husband Jamie, of Denver, and Terri McManus Gaddy, and husband Brandon, of Waxhaw; one brother, Michael McManus, and wife Donna, of Indian Land, S.C.; two sisters, Loretta Benton, and husband Wayne, of Charlotte, and Patricia Mullis of Mint Hill; and three grandchildren, Jordan Barker of Arizona, Kallie Barker of Denver, and William Gaddy of Waxhaw.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Men’s Group, 531 Hardin Road, Dallas, NC 28034, or to Gaston Hospice, 258 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC  28054.
