HICKORY—Cherryville Post 100 continued their winning ways with a 6-4 victory over Hickory Post 48 Sunday afternoon at the Catawba county fairgrounds in Hickory.

The win for Post 100 was their 12th straight after a season-opening loss to Mint Hill in the first game of a doubleheader back on May 22, improving their season record to 12-1.

After Hickory had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning on Bryce Stober’s two-run single, Cherryville got on the board in the top of the third. Jared Emory doubled with one out in the inning, and Dallas Bridges followed with an RBI double to trim the Post 48 lead to 2-1.

Post 100 took control of the game in the fifth inning, pushing 5 runs across with just two hits. Bridges and Austin Treadway drew one-out walks, and Wes Reynolds reached on an infield error to load the bases.

After a wild pitch scored Bridges to tie the game at two all, Robbie Cowie’s groundout to the shortstop scored Treadway with the go-ahead run.  Coltyn Stroupe followed with a run-scoring triple that sent Reynolds across with the third run of the inning, and Matt Bumgarner’s single scored Stroupe to give Cherryville a 5-2 lead.

Hickory threatened to cut into the lead in the sixth inning when Taiben Canipe and Weston Kerley delivered back-to-back one-out singles, but a line drive to the shortstop off the bat of Pierson Hanvey resulted in a double play when Treadway doubled off the runner at first base to end the inning.

But Post 48 did put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh.  With one out, Dylan Rios and Bryce Stober reached on consecutive infield errors by Post 100.  Jacob Fuller’s RBI groundout to first base scored Rios, and Austin Houser followed with a run-scoring single to score Stober, closing the gap to 5-4.

Cherryville, however, added a big insurance run in the top of the eighth.  Kameron Reynolds singled to start the inning, then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Treadway delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Reynolds, giving Post 100 a two-run cushion heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Bumgarner, who came on in relief in the seventh inning, retired 6 of the final eight batters that he faced to close out the win for Cherryville.

Cowie picked up the win on the mound for Cherryville.  The right-hander relieved starting pitcher Dallas Bridges in the third and pitched 4 ⅓ innings.  Cowie did not allow a run until the seventh, when two unearned runs came across for Hickory.  He struck out seven Post 48 batters, and did not issue a walk.

Bumgarner, who pitched the final 2 ⅔ innings without yielding a run, gave up just one Hickory base hit, striking out four and walking only one to earn the save.  Devin Perdue took the loss for Post 48.

Bumgarner had 3 hits to lead Post 100 at the plate, while Jared Emory added a pair of doubles.  Canipe went 2 for 4 to lead Hickory.

Cherryville, now 6-0 in division play, will travel to Taylorsville tonight for a big Western division contest.  Post 170 is 7-0 on the season, all in the division.

Hickory fell to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in division play.
