Sarah Carswell Chapman
Mrs. Sarah Carswell Chapman, 89, of Morganton passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2017 at Trinity Village following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Chapman was born October 9, 1927 in Burke County to the late Rev. Zack Carswell and Mrs. Effie Walker Carswell. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Greer Chapman; sons, Kenneth Chapman, Jr., Roger Dale Chapman, and Stephen Allan Chapman; brother, James Carswell; and great grandson Joseph McCurry.
Survivors include her children, Edward Eugene Chapman of Morganton, Carolyn Gladden and husband Walter of Morganton, Bobby Chapman and wife Joan of Morganton, Wilma McCurry and husband David of Morganton, Dennis Chapman and wife Delores of Morganton, and Darrell Chapman of Morganton; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; sisters, Louise Dale, Velva Abey, and Oma Crawley; and brothers, Ransom Carswell, Rassie Carswell, and S.S. Carswell.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. today, April 21, 2017 in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. today at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Painter and Rev. Dewight Lowman officiating.

Walter Vance Johnson
Walter Vance Johnson, age 81, of Lincolnton, died on Thursday, April 20, 2017.
His funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug McClain officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery with DAV military rites. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Johnson was born February 26, 1936, in Lincoln County, to the late David Wright Johnson and Bonnie Rhyne Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Iler Johnson; a daughter, Becky Johnson; two sisters, Rose Lee Canipe and Evelyn Gilbert; and a brother, Paul Johnson. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and then later worked as a route truck driver.
He is survived by a brother, Robert “Bob” Johnson of Lincolnton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Harrison Brown, 93, of Vale passed away on April 12, 2017 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. He was born on January 27, 1924 in Gaston County to the late Charlie and Belle Kernes Brown. He attended Beaver Dam and John Chavis schools in Cherryville. Harrison worked as a shipping clerk at Century Furniture for many years. He was also a driver for Tallent Transfer trucking company for many years.
In addition to his parents Harrison was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Matilda Henderson Brown; five sons, Harrison Brown Jr., Robert Lewis Brown, Billy Ray Henderson, Jimmy Larry Williamson and Johnny Larry Brown; one daughter, Bessie Brown; one brother, James Brown; two sisters, Zero Brown and Mabel Brown Mayfield, and one sister-in-law, Kathy F. Brown.
Mr. Brown is survived by one son, Raymond Andrew Brown of Kings Mountain; four daughters, Wanda Sosa (Salvador), Nettie Thomas (Wayne), and Isabelle Whitworth (Johnny) all of Vale, Kathleen Duncan (James D. Anderson) of Cherryville; one sister Gussie Mae Brown of Shelby; two son-in-law’s, Johnny Moncree and C.B. Ussery and four daughter-in-law’s, Lizzie Henderson, Jackie Henderson, Brenda Brown and Alina Williamson. The family will be gathering at the home of Wanda Sosa.
The Brown family will receive friends at E.F. Drum Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. A Homegoing Celebration will follow at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Bennie Thomas will officiate. Interment will be at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery.

Darrell Gene Sain, age 87, of Bill Sain Road in Vale, died on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Tommy Lineberger officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Sain was born October 14, 1929, in Lincoln County, to the late Henry Thomas Sain and Getty Mae Black Sain. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Leonard Sain; four brothers; three sisters; grandson, Lance Chesson Sain; and nephew, Tony Sain. He worked as a plant manager in furniture.
He is survived by a son, Gene Sain of Vale; three grandchildren, Haley Sain Wilson, and husband Chris, of Lincolnton, Whitney Sain and Adam Sain, both of Vale; three great-grandchildren, Lacey Mae Wilson, Selena Layne Wilson, and Cross James Wilson; and a niece, LeAnn Hull, and husband Randy.
