Beverly Jane Canipe Ward

Beverly Jane Canipe Ward, age 63, of Dale Avenue in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 7, 2017, at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Bill Bingham and Rev. Bill Phipps officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. on today at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ward was born August 16, 1953, in Lincoln County, to the late Charles Ray and Ethel Sherrill Canipe. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Milton Canipe. She worked as a nurse for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband, James S. Ward of the home; a daughter, Kasida McKinney, and husband Neil, of Spruce Pine; and four grandchildren, Karrigan Jane Crisson, Kailyn Skye McKinney, James Keaton McKinney, and Isabella Katheryn McKinney.

David Lee Ballard

IRON STATION — Mr. David Lee Ballard, age 85, of Carillon Assisted Living in Lincolnton and formerly of Iron Station, died on Thursday, April 6, 2017.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Iron Station Cemetery with Rev. John Mann officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home prior to the graveside.

Mr. Ballard was born January 15, 1932, in Lincoln County, to the late James Edgar and Delcia Sneed Ballard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Mosteller Ballard and his first wife, and Doug’s mom, LaVerne Ballard; and two brothers, Bobby Ballard and Ronnie “Eddie” Ballard.  Mr. Ballard was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict.  He was retired from Venture Packaging in Charlotte.

He is survived by his son, Doug Ballard and wife Debi of Lincolnton; his grandson, Kenan David Ballard of Lincolnton; two brothers, Donald Ballard and wife Jean of Lincolnton and Bill Ballard and wife Carolyn of Lincolnton. Also surviving Mr. Ballard are Jackie’s family, Brady “Buddy” Hoffman, Bobby Hoffman, Rodney Hoffman, Lynette H. Friday, Denise H. Cooper, Karen Hoffman, Shelley H. Rader, and their families.

Joseph Johnson ‘Joe’ Miller

IRON STATION — Joseph Johnson “Joe” Miller, age 70, went to be with his heavenly Father Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Lynn and Rev. Billy Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at Mr. Miller’s home.

He was born June 29, 1946, in Conway, S.C., son of the late Donald and Clara Mae Long Miller. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald Miller and Bill Miller, and two sisters, Betty Alford and Doris Miller Carroll.  Joseph worked at AVX Corporation in Myrtle Beach, SC for 43 years.  He was a chief of Horry County Rescue Squad for 15 years.  He was a volunteer fireman for the Conway Fire Department.  He was active in New Hope Baptist Church.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Virginia (Jenny) Shronce Miller of Iron Station; two children, Ryan Miller (Marie) and Courtney Miller Rogers (Hank); bonus children, Jake Rhodes (Natalie), Ashley Rhodes, Jenna Howard (Joshua); grandchildren, Jason, Chevy, Michaela, Bailey, River Miller and McCoy Rogers, Emery and Weston Howard; great-grandchild, Arizona Miller; in addition to several nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law, and other family, friends and church family who will miss him.

Lewis ‘Lew’ Herbert Swartwout

Lewis ‘Lew’ Herbert Swartwout, age 89, of Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Wyant officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Arden.

Lew was born on August 1, 1927, in Washington, DC. He was the son of the late Herbert B. and Betty Swartwout. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Louise Bransom; a son, James Brandon Swartwout; a sister, Suzanne Swartwout Morris; and a great-granddaughter, Bailey Colleen Sharp.

Lew served in the Navy during World War II as a Seabee from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of the “Last Man Standing” club.

Lew worked as V.P. of Jefferson Spring Service in Washington, DC from 1948 to 1972. He then was the owner of Royce Distributors (golf car dealer) in Beltsville, MD from 1972 to 1992.  He retired to Etowah and married Sarah Lee Davis Swartwout in 2003.  They moved to Lincolnton in 2010.  He was a member of the Lincoln Country Club and an avid golfer.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Sarah Lee Davis Swartwout; son, Robert Swartwout (Lee) of Addy, WA; two stepsons, Don Davis of Clarkston, MI and Lee Davis of Weston, FL; one stepdaughter, Ann Hair of Lincolnton; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Swartwout of Corinth, TX, Michael Swartwout of Wilmington, and Ericka Sharp of Sultan, WA; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Sharp, Taylor Sharp, Harper Swartwout and Hayden Swartwout ; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion.

Marcia M. Eldridge

HORNELL, N.Y. — Marcia M. Eldridge, 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, April 5, 2017 at her home on Adsit St. in N.Y.

Born in Delhi, N.Y. on Aug. 13, 1944 she was a daughter of the late Berthold and Marguerite Brandenburg. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her stepdaughter, Tahnee Sue Eldridge.

A former resident of Gastonia for many years, Marcia moved to Lincolnton where she resided for about 15 years before moving to Hornell in 2008. She was employed in the textile business for most of her life and dearly loved her two cats, Daisy and Fritz.

Her loving family includes her husband of 23 years, Theodore H. “Ted” Eldridge, who she married on July 31, 1993; her son, Harold “Chip” (Beth) Meyers and their son, Joshua of Grover; her stepdaughter, Tresa LaVerde and her sons, Brayden LaVerde and Laityn Morey of Hornell, N.Y.; her two brothers, Bert Brandenberg and Larry (Edna) Brandenberg all of Oneonta, N.Y.; her sister, Lorena Mayes of Bainbridge, N.Y. as well as several nieces and nephews.

To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Oscar Medlin, Jr.

Oscar Medlin, Jr., age 88, of Timberlane Drive in Lincolnton, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in his home surrounded by his wife, Glenda of 62 years; son Mark Medlin of Raleigh; daughter Beth Medlin Mangano and husband Dr. Charles Mangano, also of Raleigh.

The service celebrating his life will be held today, April 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Wyant officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Junior was born March 13, 1929 in Gaston County. He was the only child of Oscar and Alva Grayson Medlin, who preceded him in death. He was a loving “papaw” to Catherine, Caroline and Charlotte Medlin and Peter and Katie Mangano. His is survived by a cousin Annis Black of Hickory.

He attended Lincolnton High School where he excelled at football and baseball. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was a volunteer fireman in the City of Lincolnton for 17 years. He was a LincMeal driver for many years and a member of First United Methodist Church, the Local VFW, and Lincoln Country Club where he played weekly with his group of dear friends. He loved antique cars and loved spending time in his garage restoring his ‘47 Chevy convertible.

He was an avid Lincolnton Wolf Pack fan and always enjoyed the Friday Night Lights. He retired from Carolina Freight Carriers in Cherryville after 26 years of a perfect driving record.

He will be greatly missed by his loving family and devoted cat.

Zettie Neill Morrison, 102, of Cherryville died April 4, 2017.

A funeral service will be held April 8, 2017 at 1 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. Burial will follow at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from noon until 12:45 p.m. at the church.

Mark Lee Huffman, 46, of Conover died April 3, 2017.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hickory. Burial with military honors will follow at Sullins Cemetery in Spruce Pine. The family will receive friends today from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Nancy Ann Thomason, 67, of Hildebran died April 1, 2017.

Roland John Norio, Sr., 86, of Terrell died April 5, 2017.
