Elsie Kay Sansing

Elsie Kay Sansing, 62, of Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, died Monday, February 27, 2017 at Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas.

She was born in Rutherford County, on April 22, 1954, to the late JD Sansing and Sarah Monfredo Sansing. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her three brothers, Bobby, Jimmy and Douglas Sansing and three sisters, Teresa Lynn Sansing, Joan Sansing, and Mary Helen Bolton.

She is survived by four sisters, Dorothy Brady and husband Bill of Bessemer City, Martha Johnson of Nebo, Marion Kelly and husband Mike of Union Mills, and Brenda Kelly of Union Mills; two special nephews, Junior Winstead and wife Hope of Bessemer City and Billy Brady, III of Candler and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Hephzibah Presbyterian Church in Bessemer City. Funeral services will be held from 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Hephzibah Presbyterian Church in Bessemer City with the Rev. Brady Hayworth officiating. The burial will follow in the Spindale City Cemetery.

Mabel Burris Barta

Mabel Burris Barta, 92, died peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2017, at Fisher Park Health and Rehab Center, after a ten-year journey with dementia.

Mrs. Barta was born in Cherryville, to Dr. F. Ray and Hettie Strickland Burris. Mrs. Barta was active in the NC Chiropractic Women’s Auxiliary, Wildwood Garden Club, Eastern Star, Guilford Battle Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Guilford Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, an avid golfer and calligrapher.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Wesley L. Barta and her brothers, Dr. Risden F. Burris and Dr. Efird S. Burris.

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Barta and Julie Trull (William) both of Greensboro; grandchildren, Nikki Kontoulas of Charlotte and Mark Cory of Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene, Tex., and sister, Mrs. Lavinia Burris Kuck of Lincolnton, and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pastors Discretionary Fund, First Lutheran Church, 3600 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.


Bessie Louise Newman Grigg

Bessie Louise Newman Grigg, age 73, of Mary’s Grove Church Road in Kings Mountain, died on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 1, 2017, in the Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church cemetery with Rev. Charlene Hutchings officiating. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Bessie was born April 25, 1943, in Osyka, Mississippi, to the late Leslie and Effie Jean Westmoreland Newman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Levon Grigg; three brothers, Leslie Newman, Jerry Newman, and Roy Newman; and a sister, Ruby Newman.  She worked in textiles.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy L. Grigg, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Leslie Grigg and Chrystal Grigg, both of the home; two step-daughters, Amy Grant of Lincolnton and Linda Grigg of Shelby; two sisters, Inez Cunningham, and husband Larry, of Lincolnton, and Barbara Newman of California; two brothers, Fleet Norman, and wife Rhonda, of Maiden, and Marcus Newman of Texas; sister-in-law, Theresa Newman of Kentwood, La.; one granddaughter, Maddison Grigg; and six step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church, 1223 Mary’s Grove Church Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton is serving the Grigg family.


Birt Lee Fuller Maddox

Birt Lee Fuller Maddox, 81, of Lawndale died on February 26, 2017.

Funeral service will be held March 5, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Fallston Baptist Church with burial to follow in Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Patricia ‘Tese’ Ellen Stevens

Patricia “Tese” Ellen Stevens, 52, of Hickory died on February 27, 2017.

Services will be held privately.

The Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton is serving the Stevens family.


Lonnie William ‘Buddy’ Cobb, Sr.

Lonnie William “Buddy” Cobb, Sr., 81 of Lincolnton died on February 25, 2017.

Funeral service will be held March 4, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with burial to follow in Pine Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
