Gregory ‘Greg’ Thomas Spurling

Gregory “Greg” Thomas Spurling, 41, of Newton passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at his residence.

He was born April 10, 1975, in Catawba County to Thomas and Marsha Gutyar Spurling of Belwood. Greg was the Pastor of Freedom Biker Church in Hickory; a 1993 graduate of Burns High School and a 2006 graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute. Greg was a great man who was radically changed by God’s grace. He loved God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. He loved his wife and kids more than anything in the world. He loved his family and his church deeply. More than anything, he wanted everyone to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ and the urgency to make the choice to follow Him.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Frank Gutyar and Warren Spurling.

Those left to cherish his memory are wife of 22½ years, Dakota Nantz Spurling of the home; son, Luke Spurling of the home; daughter, Cheyenne Spurling of the home; parents, Thomas and Marsha Gutyar Spurling of Belwood; brother, Scott Spurling and wife Dawn of Belwood; sisters, Leslie Webb and husband Derek of Belwood; Myra Juban and husband Matt of Seoul, S. Korea; grandmothers, Marjorie Spurling of Shelby; Eunice Gutyar of Newton; Favorite In-laws, CB and Brenda Nantz of Iron Station; brother-in-law: Rush Nantz and wife Heather of Iron Station; 15 nieces and nephews; 1 great niece.

A memorial service celebrating Greg’s life will be held today, February 8, 2017, at 6 p.m. at Freedom Biker Church in Hickory. Rev. Marcus Redding and Rev. Mike Beasley will officiate. The family will be available following the service. Those serving as honorary pallbearers are: Bill Whisnant, Jason Moretz, John Marlar, Brett Cole, and Jack Lowman.

David “Mike” Michael Goins

David “Mike” Michael Goins, 65, of Sherrills Ford passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at his residence.

He was born October 13, 1951 in Lincoln County to the late David A. Goins and Annie Milburn Carpenter of Crouse.   Mike enjoyed playing golf and chess; he also enjoyed playing amateur softball during the 1970s and 1980s for local leagues in the area.

Those left to cherish his memory are wife of 11 years Victoria Reep Goins of the home; daughter, Shannon M. Goins of Sherrills Ford; mother, Annie Milburn Carpenter of Crouse; brothers, Cone Carpenter, III of Crouse and Rickey Carpenter and wife Lorie of Cherryville; and sister, Teresa Levasseur of Crouse.

A memorial service will be held on today, February 8, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford. Rev. Ernie Richards will officiate. Military honors by American Legion Post 48 will follow.

Zella M. Ramsey

Zella M. Ramsey, 89, of Lincolnton, passed away February 5, 2017 at Carolina’s Healthcare System – Lincolnton.

She was born November 9, 1927, a native of Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Jacob and Fanny Mosteller.

Zella was a member of Ranlo Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memories is her son, Michael Ramsey and wife Janet; daughter, Starline Conner; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Kenneth Ramsey.

A funeral service, officiated by Pastor James Land, will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Greene Funeral Service – South Chapel 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052. Receiving of friends and family will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park.

Sherry Gene Turner Reitzel

Sherry Gene Turner Reitzel, 65, of Newton died on February 5, 2017.

A service to celebrate Sherry’s life will be held on February 9, 2017 at 1 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Newton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church.

Herman Reid Schronce

Herman Reid Schronce, 85, of Maiden died on February 6, 2017.

The funeral service will be held on February 9, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Burke Mortuary in Maiden. Burial will follow at Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 p.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

John ‘Harvey’ Wilson

John “Harvey” Wilson, 89, of Catawba died on February 6, 2017.

The funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Concord United Methodist Church in Catawba. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Rose Marie Fritzler Bonner

Rose Marie Fritzler Bonner, 70, of Maiden died on February 3, 2017.

The Funeral Service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Maiden prior to the service.

Bobby Dean Watkins

Bobby Dean Watkins, 57, of Lincolnton died on February 3, 2017.

Funeral service is February 10, 2017 at 2 p.m. in White’s Family Chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Vale. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
