A former employee of Fifth Third Bank in Boger City has been arrested on fraud charges by Lincolnton Police officers.
Jeffrey Dean Etchison, Jr., 33, of 113 West College Street, Apartment E in Stanley, was arrested on Tuesday after an investigation into a fraudulent withdrawal at the bank. Etchinson was charged with embezzlement, identity theft, forgery of an instrument, uttering a forged instrument and obtaining property by a false pretense.
The incident occurred on Aug. 15 when Etchison forged a withdrawal slip and withdrew $2,000 from an elderly man’s account without permission, officers said. After noticing the transaction, the account holder contacted the Fifth Third Bank, located at 2586 East Main Street, and also filed a police report. Etchison was interviewed during the initial investigation and informed officers that a while male came in to the branch and performed the illegal transaction after a legal one was made, officers said. Fifth Third provided surveillance footage of the man in question, which was then distributed to media outlets by the Lincolnton Police Department.
The original suspect was identified and interviewed and it was determined that he was a witness rather than the offender. Etchison confessed to the withdrawal and to intentionally leading officers to the wrong suspect, according to a press release.
Etchison is being held at the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on $25,000 secured bond.
Officers Isaiah Matthews and John Sullivan of the Lincolnton Police Department investigated the case, which is ongoing.
