Burton Roy Bley
Burton Roy Bley, 89, currently of Newton passed away on August 12, 2014 at Catawba Valley Hospital in Hickory after a brief illness.
He was born August 17, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to parents Clarence and Eunice Bley, and preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Edith Noel Bley. He earned his B.S. in Business Administration at Washington University of St. Louis and served in the navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Burt retired from his career as a real estate manager at Unical in 1986. He enjoyed golf and played frequently with his wife, son-in-law Bill and many friends. Burt was known throughout his life for his great sense of humor, ever present smile and slightly dirty martinis. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Burt is survived by his daughters, Lynne Gronning of Denver, Karen Bley of Mebane, son-in-law Bill Gronning of Denver, his daughter Karen’s partner, Luther Livermon; grandchildren, Jens Gronning of Stanley and Leah Romanoff and her husband Daniel Romanoff of Charlottesville, Va. and his corgi mix dog Sandy.
A memorial service will be held at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver on August 16, 2014 at 3 p.m. A reception will be held for friends and family following the ceremony.
Donna Raper Heffner
Donna Raper Heffner, 59, of Maiden died Monday, August 11, 2014 at Sherrills Ford Hospice House.
Born October 29, 1954 in Habersham County, Ga. to the late Charlie Bentley and Martha Ballew Raper. Donna was a member of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, an excellent homemaker, she enjoyed interior design, making custom draperies, kitchen and bed accessories, and was founder of MawMaw’s Funnelcakes and helped with various community fundraisers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Rachael Miller Ballew.
Left to cherish her memory: husband of 35 years, Joseph W. (Joe) Heffner of the home; son, Michael Scott Sherrill and wife Amy of Denver; daughter, Elizabeth Antonia (Heffner) Parker of Denver; brothers, Ronnie Raper and wife Faye of Troutman, Michael Raper and wife Karen of Easley, S.C.; sisters, Debbie Baker and husband Steve of Denver, Diane Umbarger and husband Sammy of Mooresville; grandchildren, Landon Parker, Bayleigh Parker, Wyatt Sherrill, Lily Sherrill and Shaylah Wilson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden. Rev. Charles Worley and Rev. A. Tanner Mundy will officiate. A time of fellowship will follow the service in the fellowship hall.

Frances Marie Carpenter Perkins
MAIDEN — Frances Marie Carpenter Perkins, 97, of Maiden passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at her residence.
Born July 14, 1917 in Iron Station she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Lizzie Armstrong Carpenter. Mrs. Perkins was a homemaker who lived in Maiden for more than 60 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded her in death by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Mack Perkins: three brothers, John Carpenter (Pansy), James Carpenter (Virginia), Bill Carpenter (Evelyn); five sisters, Eleanora C. Watts (Monk), Pansy C. Kiser (Fay), Virginia C. Heavner (Henry), Hattie C. Grayson (Ivey), Mattie Carpenter.
Survivors include, daughter, Pat Perkins and Tony Moore of Maiden; son, Bob Perkins and wife, Pat of Denver; granddaughter, Leighann Perkins Campbell and husband Scott of Lincolnton; grandson, Craig Perkins and wife Beth of Lincolnton; five great-grandchildren, Lauren Campbell, Hunter Campbell, Jake Campbell, Cason Perkins and Chase Perkins all of Lincolnton; one remaining sister-in-law, Iva Bass Perkins; and a number of nieces and nephews
The funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with Hospice Chaplain, Meg Skidmore officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

VALE — Edward R. Spaulding, 68, passed away at his home in Vale on August 13, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Other services in Madison, Maine will be held at a later date.
He was born July 16, 1946 in Madison, Maine, and a graduate of Madison Memorial High School Class of 1965. Ed served in the U.S. Air Force and is a Vietnam veteran. He lived in Pinellas Park, Fla. and Vale where he was a cabinet maker.
He is predeceased by his parents, Martelle Spaulding and Thelma Spaulding (Mitchell).
Ed is survived by his beloved high school sweetheart, Sharon Spaulding; his loving daughter, Cindy Spaulding of Belmont; two long-time kitty companions, Punky and Bear; two sisters, Audrey Merrow and husband Lawrence Sr. of Belgrade, ME and Ruth Monfils and husband Kenneth of Charlotte; one brother, Clyde Spaulding and wife Marjorie of Madbury, NH; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Heartfelt thanks to all who so compassionately aided in the care and support for him and his family.
