William J. Keener
William J. Keener, 90, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014. He was born in Murray County, Georgia, son of the late Osvil and Ermine Chapman Keener. He was preceded in death by a son Michael Stanley Keener. Mr. Keener was a WWII Veteran who served on the Naval Carrier USS Bismark Sea as a fighter plane radioman/gunner. The USS Bismark Sea was sunk by two suicide bombers off Iwo Jima in 1945. After several hours in the water, Mr. Keener was picked up by a British Ship and was able to see the flag raising on Iwo Jima the next day. Upon returning from the war, Mr. Keener married his wife of 68 years Geraldine. Mr. Keener went to work for ET&WNC Trucking Company in 1951 as a city driver and ended his trucking career as a district manager of seven terminals in North and South Carolina in 1978. After farming in Georgia following retirement, Mr. Keener returned to his current home in Denver since 2002.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine Bryant Keener; one daughter, Kimberly K. Hull and husband Garry of Stanley; one son Gary Lynn Keener of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Blanche Ross of Dalton, Ga.; two brothers, Bob Keener of Dalton, Ga. and Van R. Keener of Colorado; four grandchildren, Allison L. Moody, Britt L. Hull, Kelly Newsome and Tracey Webb; nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Keener will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

A celebration of life service was held August 9, 2014 at 3 p.m. preceded by receiving of friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden. Burial followed at Antioch Baptist Church in Lincolnton.
