Plentiful sunlight and ample space made the Denver storefront that is the new home to Pleasurable Paints the perfect spot for owner Georgia Mahr.
The concept is simple, yet effective — pre-stenciled canvases that allow budding artists from all age ranges to express themselves without feeling the stress of making something perfect. Mahr got the idea from going to other places that offered similar opportunities.
“I started going to different places that offered it, and I really enjoyed it,” Mahr said.
An art lover for over 20 years and a fan of simpler forms, the hairdresser by trade wanted to see something new and exciting in the community.
“It’s an easy way to relax,” Mahr said.
Really delving into painting and mural work over the last year and a half, her love for painting is evident in the large beach-colored mural that adorns the wall. Described on their Facebook page as a fun upbeat atmosphere where everyone leaves with their finished masterpiece, Pleasurable Paints offers a wide variety of opportunities for first-time painters and seasoned artists alike. In the adult class, which Mahr calls the Happy Painter class, students come in and their canvas is pre-stenciled. Paints and brushes are laid out and a skilled instructor gives step-by-step instructions.
Currently, Pleasurable Paints offers a children’s art camp, in which every student choses their own design, traces it into their canvas and paints how they see fit.
The classes offer first time artists a chance to learn the ins and outs of painting without all of the pressure to immediately create. It’s a factor that Mahr hopes people will take to heart.
“If you have something you want to create, come on in,” Mahr said. “We will help you create it.”
Prices range from $25-$45 depending on the canvas.
Mahr hopes to later expand classes to six-week intensives that will teach the techniques of art. She would also like to help provide art education for home school students. She emphasizes an open door policy when it comes to her business. All are welcome to come and learn.
Pleasurable Paints, located at 7505 Highway 73, Suite C, in Denver, is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. For more information, call (980) 226 – 0170 or visit them online at www.facebook.com/pages/pleasurable-paints.
