For the next two weeks, a portion of the Marcia Cloninger Rail Trail will be closed while repairs are made on the South Aspen Street Bridge.
Approximately a quarter of a mile of the trail will be closed, between South Government Street and Academy Street.
According to NCDOT Transportation Supervisor Travis Mull, the work will include welding, preventative maintenance and painting of the bridge.
“The purpose behind painting the bridge and preventative maintenance is to ensure and maintain the integrity of the bridge,” Mull said. “We’ll be working on the middle of the bridge, right over the walkway, so we’ve put up barricades and ‘trail closed’ signage because we really don’t want people to be entering and endangering their safety.”
The trail is scheduled to be closed for up to two weeks. According to Mull, weather conditions are a significant factor in the NCDOT bridge maintenance timeline.
“We’re hoping we’ll get it done before then, but it really depends on the weather,” he said.
The trail, named after the late city councilwoman Marcia H. Cloninger, is part of the Carolina Thread Trail Project.
