Shelby Post 82 rallied from a three-run deficit Thursday to defeat Cherryville Post 100 6-5 and clinch at least a share of the Area IV Western Division regular season title.
Post 82 (23-2, 13-2) has three games remaining entering next week’s Area IV playoffs, including Saturday’s showdown with Post 100 at Cherryville’s Fraley Field. Post 100 (14-9, 9-5) has four games to play.
An RBI double by West Lincoln alum Brett Huff highlighted a three-run third inning for Cherryville, which led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Post 82, which got a hit from every starter in its lineup, got RBI singles from Bradley Evans and Chandler Young off Post 100 starter Chandler Jenkins to make it 4-3.
A run-scoring double by Jonathan Carpenter in the sixth added a run to Post 100’s lead, but the defending Area IV champion answered with a solo home run by Evans in the seventh.
Post 82 tied it at 5 on Dustin Jones’ RBI hit.
Left-handed reliever Jalen Byrd held Cherryville scoreless over the final three innings. Caleb Burnham’s RBI single plated the eventual run in the bottom of the eighth.
