Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday arrested more than 20 suspected street-level drug dealers and narcotics traffickers during the first couple of hours of Operation “Play 60,” narcotics investigators’ seventh round-up in four years.
Narcotics Lt. Jason Reid first briefed his unit’s men and fellow agency officers before sending them out onto the streets in teams to locate and arrest the 60 individuals targeted in the operation.
Nearly 10 Catawba County deputies assisted the effort, and apprehended suspects living inside Lincoln County’s northern neighbor.
The aid of additional agencies in Lincoln County roundups has not been a common trend, but when necessary, outside help is called in — even the assistance of the feds.
In January 2012, United States Marshals made their presence known in Lincoln County drug operation “.38 Special.”
While a handful of alleged offenders in “Play 60” live outside the community, specifically in Newton and Hickory, a majority of the individuals have homes in Lincolnton, Stanley, Denver, Iron Station and Cherryville, investigators said.
Drug roundups have occurred about twice a year since Sheriff David Carpenter took office in 2010, and sometimes include duplicate suspects from one operation to the next.
Certain alleged offenders have appeared on roundup lists once, twice or even multiple times.
Wednesday’s initiative proved unique from its six predecessors by including less than a quarter of repeat offenders, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators send the list of names for each operation to a Grand Jury a couple of weeks beforehand, with a goal of securing indictments against the suspects.
All are accused of engaging in illegal activity with controlled substances like marijuana, heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, or prescription pills — Xanax, Hydrocodone or Suboxone — during narcotics officers’ sometimes year-long investigations.
Reid said undercover work for the agency’s most recent initiative began in October.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, a total of 35 suspects in “Play 60” had been arrested, but Lincoln County Sheriff’s patrol deputies are expected to hunt down remaining at-large individuals during their regularly scheduled patrol shifts.
Investigators said less than a dozen individuals remain on the loose from the more than 300 they’ve included in all seven operations over the years.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has made its mark on the community and surrounding region by making roundups and the pursuit of drug dealers a top priority for the agency over the years.
“As long as I am sheriff, we will continue to seek (drug offenders) out and put them in prison,” Carpenter said.
