TODAY
VBS kickoff

Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 112 Mt. Zion Ch. Rd. in Cherryville, will host a Vacation Bible School kickoff event 4:30-8:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a bathing suit and towel for water slide activities. Dinner will be provided.

Gospel concert
Exodus Baptist Church, 3164 Exodus Ch. Rd. in Maiden, will host Gospel group The Griggs in concert at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but a love offering will be collected. Refreshments will be available after the event in the fellowship hall. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Theatre guild play
Gale S. Elmore, CPA, and the Lincoln Theatre Guild will present Footloose, directed by Anna Lisa Johannessen, 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton. Cost is $11 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Additional show times will be 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. To purchase tickets, visit lincolntheatreguild.com. Youth retreat
North Brook Baptist Church, 7421 Flay Rd. in Cherryville, will host a Student Ministries retreat 7-9 p.m. for grades 7-12 at the student center.

Poetry Lincolnton
Poetry Lincolnton, in sponsorship with Main Street Rag, will salute Maya Angelou during a special poetry night 7 p.m. at the Cultural Center. Helen Losse will serve as the event’s guest poet and will read from her new book.
Open mic will follow.

SATURDAY
Heart Healthy race

Yard/bake sale
Ebenezer UMC, Cooksville Road in Vale, will host a yard and bake sale with breakfast items available for purchase 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Individuals interested in renting space to sell items can call (828) 302-4948. Tables will be available to rent. Proceeds will be used to purchase video screens for the church.

Food giveaway
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2639 E. N.C. 150 in Lincolnton, will host a “Bread of Life” food giveaway 9-11 a.m. Food will be administered on a first-come, first-serve basis. The program is sponsored by Christian Ministry of Lincolnton and Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte.

Historic anniversary event
Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will host a ceremony starting 10 a.m. on Jeb Seagle Drive in honor of the 234th anniversary of the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill. The event will also feature the SAR National Society’s color guard.

Overeaters Anonymous

Horseshoe tournament
Gaston County Parks & Recreation will host the Betty Wilson Classic Evening Horseshoe Tournament 6 p.m. at George Poston Park. Cost is $10. Registration will close at 5:30 p.m. Eligible participants are members of North or South Carolina or the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Boger City UMC, 2320 E. Main St. in Lincolnton, will host a community luncheon 11:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall with a home-style meat and vegetable combination, desserts and beverage. An $8 donation is suggested.

Luncheon benefit
Bethphage Lutheran Church, 3440 N.C. 182 in Lincolnton, will host a chicken luncheon for Trent and Keisha Huss to cover medical expenses for baby Dixie, born premature, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. An $8 donation is suggested.

Family reunion
The 61st annual Lightfoot William and Rebecca Boggs Hoyle reunion will be 1 p.m. at Bethlehem UMC in Cherryville. Relatives are urged to bring a well-filled picnic basket.

Rose society
The Cleveland/Lincoln Rose Society will meet 2:30 p.m. at the Cleveland County Cooperative Extension, 130 Post Rd. in Shelby. Consulting rosarians will teach members how to prepare roses for a show. Jo Ann Ostrander will also share with the group information she acquired from the Asheville Rose Exhibition. Visitors are welcome, and refreshments will be provided. College board meeting

Gaston College will hold its Board of Trustees meeting 4 p.m. at the Dallas campus (Myers Center Board Room, 2nd floor).

GED course
Registration is available to individuals interested in taking a Basic Skills Student Success class in preparation for the GED. The class must be completed before taking the test. Classes will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. today (Monday) through Thursday in room 118 of Gaston College. For more information, call (704) 748-5226. Participants will be entered to win a scholarship to pay for the GED.

Woodturning competition/exhibit
Today (Monday) is the first day to submit entries for the summer woodturning competition and exhibit at the Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton. The Arts Council of Lincoln County is sponsoring the contest. Entries will be accepted through June 25. The exhibit, “Woodturning: The Known and the Unknown” will be open to the public July 1-31.
