A 10-year-old Lincolnton boy received critical injuries this week after accidentally hanging himself, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at a home on the 2800 block of Long Shoals Road, according to an agency press release.
The boy’s grandmother told deputies he had been playing basketball outside the residence when he became entangled in the goal’s net.
She went outside to check on him and located him hanging, prompting her to immediately call his father, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The boy’s father cut down the 5-foot net and performed CPR.
Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services later responded to the home.
Advanced Life Support units and one Quick Response vehicle with EMS assisted the victim, suffering at the time from life-threatening injuries, before transporting him by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for treatment, according to an EMS spokesperson.
Crews with South Fork Volunteer Fire Department and Long Shoals Fire Department additionally responded to the scene.
The victim was later taken to CMC-Main in Charlotte and was awake and in stable condition earlier this week, deputies said.
Specific updates on his condition were not available at time of publication.
