The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said a man posed as a utility worker to gain access to a home on the county’s western end and stole a jewelry box.
The victim, a 90-year-old woman, told deputies that a man came to the door of her home on the 1400 block of Shoal Road and told her that he was working on power lines and needed to find out if she had power, according to a press release.
Deputies said the man went into the woman’s kitchen and then walked down a hallway to her bedroom, where he grabbed a jewelry box containing costume jewelry. He pushed her out of the way while leaving the home.
The suspect was described as a 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 middle-aged, clean-shaven white male with short hair. He was wearing a faded gray or green baseball hat and an old traffic vest with two stripes on the front.
Deputies said the suspect was driving a red full-size pickup truck, possibly a Dodge, with chrome on the bottom and black plastic in the bed.
The Sheriff’s Office has asked that anyone with information contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at (704) 732-9050, the Lincoln County Communications Center at (704) 735-8202 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 736-8909.
Deputies also advised that residents, when faced with a similar situation, should ask for work identification and, if in doubt, should call the company the person claims to work for to verify their credentials.
