TODAY
Kids camp

Registration is now available for Gaston and Lincoln County 6th-8th graders to attend “Camp Discover” 8:30-11:45 a.m. daily June 16-19 at the Gaston College-Dallas campus in Gastonia. Students will learn about radio and television broadcasting, technology careers, nursing, yoga, health and fitness, cosmetology, fire training, law enforcement, emergency medical services and more. Fundraiser for local student

A fundraiser for North Lincoln High School student Hunter Dexter will be at Untouchables, 6020 S. N.C. 16 in Denver. Proceeds will cover the cost of Dexter’s heart surgery. He was diagnosed earlier this year with a fatal heart condition. For more information, call (704) 483-9737.

Blood drive
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will host a blood drive 4-7 p.m. at Denver Fire Department, 3956 N. N.C. 16 in Denver. For more information or to schedule an appointment during the drive, call (704) 972-4700 or visit carolinadonor.org.

Preservation class
The N.C. Cooperative Extension will host a class on freezing foods and canning tomatoes 5:30 p.m. in the first floor demonstration kitchen inside the Citizens Center in downtown Lincolnton. The class is part of a series on food preservation. Additional classes will be July 9 (pickling/relish) and July 14 (jams/jellies). For more information or to register, call (704) 736-8461.

Cheer/football tryouts
West Lincoln Optimist Club will host cheerleading and football signups for fall 2014 6-7 p.m. at West Lincoln Optimist Park, 5959 N.C. 27 in Vale. Cost is $80 for football and $50 for cheerleading (uniform $150). Final payment is due July 15. Additional tryouts will be 6-7 p.m. on Thursday.

NARFE meeting

Chapter 1983 of The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) will meet 12 p.m. at Lincoln House restaurant. Visitors are welcome. For more information, call (704) 748-6498.

Soil & Water Board
The Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District Board will meet 5 p.m at the Citizens Center in downtown Lincolnton. For more information, call (704) 736-8501.

Board of Education
The Lincoln County Board of Education will meet 6:30 p.m. for a closed session at the Board of Education Administrative Offices, 353 N. Generals Blvd. in Lincolnton. An open session will follow at 7 p.m.

Reading program
The Lincoln County Public Library will host a kickoff event 6:30 p.m. in the Citizens Center in Lincolnton for its free 2014 Summer Reading Program for rising 1st-12 graders. The event will feature games, music and other activities. The program, which will run through July 29, will focus on the five senses mixed with science and wildlife exploration. Iron Station seniors

The Iron Station senior citizens will meet 12 p.m. for a covered dish lunch at Ironton Presbyterian Church.

Spay/neuter clinic
The Humane Society of Lincoln County will host registration for its upcoming low-cost spay/neuter clinic (June 24) 1-4 p.m. at 2422 Country Club Rd. in Lincolnton. Cats are $30 and dogs are $55. There is no additional cost for large animals or females in heat. Payment in the form of cash or check is due at registration.
