Betty Jean Carpenter Caldwell
Betty Jean Carpenter Caldwell, age 84, of 514 Victory Grove Church Road in Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2014.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Boger City Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Bigham officiating. Burial will follow in the Hulls Grove Baptist Church – North cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Betty Jean was born July 6, 1929, in Lincoln County to the late Samuel Thomas Carpenter Sr. and Emma Elizabeth Rhyne Carpenter. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Lee Caldwell, Jr., three brothers, Sam Carpenter, Ernest Carpenter, and Jerry Carpenter, and one sister, Dorothy Martin. She retired from Nitso and enjoyed working in her flowers and gardening.
She is survived by a son, D. Michael Caldwell and wife Annette of Lincolnton; a daughter, Vada N. Mosteller and husband Steve of Vale; one brother, John Carpenter of Lincolnton; and three sisters, Minnie Houk of Charlotte, Audrie Smith of Salisbury, and Ruth Gillenwater of Charlotte.

Mr. Kenneth ‘Ray’ Dodgin Sr.
Mr. Kenneth “Ray” Dodgin Sr., age 74, of 1289 Huckleberry Drive in Lincolnton, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Carolina’s Medical Center in Pineville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Lincolnton with Reverend Stanley Spence officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home.
Mr. Dodgin was born on February 16, 1940 to the late Jim Dodgin and Sarah Jenkins Dodgin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Harrison Dodgin of the home; two sons, Kenneth “Kenny” Ray Dodgin Jr. and wife, Ginger of Lincolnton and Everett Porter and wife Debbie of Illinois; one daughter, Kimberly Elaine Dodgin of Lincolnton; two sisters, Brenda Dodgin Current of Lincolnton; Judy Dodgin Smith and husband George of Lincolnton. Ray is also survived by four step-sons, Ernie Knight and wife, Julia of Longs, S.C., Roger Knight and wife, Rochelle of Lakeland, Fla., John Knight of Winston Salem, and Steve Knight of Mountain City, Tenn.; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ray was loved dearly by his family and had many friends. Before he retired, he was a well known local businessman and owner of Dodgin’s, Inc. in Lincolnton. He was an avid sportsman who loved golf and especially loved fishing.

James Hazel ‘Hap’ Heavner
Mr. James Hazel “Hap” Heavner, age 85, of 242 Bob Burgin Road in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.
His funeral service will be 2 p.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael White officiating. Burial will follow in the Gainsville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Heavner was born November 23, 1928, in Gaston County, to the late Vonnie Lee and Nancy Moore Heavner. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by children, Carol Heavner and Robert Heavner, and siblings Maggie Heavner, J.B. Heavner, Lester Heavner, and Bobby Heavner. For the last 40 years he worked for Lincoln County in ground maintenance and also for Lincoln County Animal Control. Hap enjoyed gardening, working in the yard, and taking care of his animals.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Harrelson (Clay Sr.) of Lincolnton; son, Sonny Kistler (Barbara) of Lincolnton; sisters, Vivian P. Dellinger (Joe) of Cherryville and Gladys Mauney of Dallas; four grandchildren, Christy Pless (Ray), Stephanie Gay (Jamie), Clayboy Harrelson (Haylee), and Melissa Kistler; eight great-grandchildren, Jeff Pless, Austin Gay, Addison Gay, Aaron Kistler, Judd Harrelson, Tyler Pless, Zander Harrelson, and Kolby Pless; and his beloved pet “Poochie.”
