Ava Ninghua Chang
Ava Ninghua Chang, 65, of Dallas, Tex., formerly of Denver died Saturday May 24, 2014. She was born in Nanjing, China South Capital July 10, 1948. Coming from Communist China, she loved and appreciated the good life America had to offer. Her family became US citizens and worked very hard to be part of the community.
Ava and her husband James moved to Denver in 1988 where they owned and operated Triangle Dry Cleaners for 24 years. In 2013 they relocated to Dallas, Tex. to be close to their son, Hao.
She fought a hard battle with cancer which finally took her life. According to her doctors “she was one tough cookie.”
Services were conducted on Monday May 26, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas, Tex.
Ava leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, James Xueyuan Zhu; loving son, Hao Zhu and wife Shelby of Dallas; granddaughter, Lilly; sister, Evelyn Chang; brother, Joseph Chang both of Los Angeles, Calif.; nephew, Ming Zhang and wife Janice of Pensacola, Fla. and a host of friends.

Patricia Ann Keener Garris
VALE — Patricia Ann Keener Garris, age 66, of 2668 Old Wagon Trail, Vale went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 25, 2014.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Hulls Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Marcus Redding and Rev. Jared Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at Hulls Grove Baptist Church.
Pat was born June 14, 1947, in Lincoln County. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert Keener and Vertie Tallent.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Rich Garris of the home; two daughters, Donna Virginia Gunter and husband Billy, and Angela Garris Mosteller and husband Monte, all of Vale; two brothers, Noel Keener and wife LouAnn, and Nathan Keener and wife Myra, all of Lincolnton; a sister, Janice Dellinger and husband Carroll Dean of Lincolnton; stepfather, Carl Tallent of Lincolnton; and four grandchildren, Josh Mosteller, Hayley Mosteller, Eric Gunter, and Emily Gunter.
Pat opened her home to all and was “second mom” to her siblings, nieces, nephews and her children’s friends, as well as, a “Memaw” to her grandchildren’s friends.

Jessie Irene Killian
Jessie Irene Killian, 100, of Stanley passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014. Born April 18, 1914, she was the oldest of the six children of the late Jessie Claude Killian and Rena Sifford Killian.
Survivors include her sister, Vera Mae Killian of the home in Stanley; brother, Claude Alonzo Killian of Stanley; and another sister, Frances Killian Hampton of Stanley. She was predeceased by a brother, John Wiley (J.W.) Killian and a sister, Isabell Laney Killian. Also surviving are a niece, Rebecca Kay Killian and two nephews, Richard Hampton Jr. and William K. Hampton; two nephews predeceased her in death, Robert K. Hampton and John D. Hampton, Angela M. Hampton, widow of John survives. Also surviving are one great nephew and four great-nieces; one great niece passed away in 2013. Also surviving are two great-great nieces and four great-great nephews.
Miss Killian grew up on a farm in Gaston County. Her first jobs away from the farm were in mills in Cornelius, Lincolnton and Mt. Holly before she joined Efird’s Department Store in Charlotte in 1946 as a sales associate. Later, she was to become the bookkeeper for Plaza Men’s Store in Charlotte, a position she kept until retirement in 1980. She joined Unity Presbyterian Church in 1983 and was currently the oldest member at the time of her death.
Funeral services will be conducted at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carol Clark officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at Unity. Interment will follow at Martha’s Chapel Cemetery on Killian Farm Road.

Milton Louis Newcombe Jr.
Milton Louis Newcombe Jr., 54, of Iron Station died Friday May 23, 2014 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, exactly where he would want to be. Born December 9, 1959 in Wilson he was a son of late Milton “Bud” Louis Newcombe Sr. and Betty Newcombe.
He was a graduate of Fike High School in Wilson, attended the University of Maryland, was an organ donor providing the gift of sight and was Senior Operations Support Representative for Schneider National. He was an avid NASCAR fan and grill artist extraordinaire. A US Army veteran he was an integral part of many overseas operations during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Memorial Services will be conducted 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sue Newcombe; sons, Steven (Crystal) Newcombe, Wesley (Amber) Newcombe; daughter, Chrystina (Brett) Van Stempvoort; brothers, Jimmy Overman, Keith Bass; sisters, Tammy Newcombe, Jenny Newcombe; grandchildren, Madicyn, Chloe, Dane, Savannah, Dalton, Zachary and Cortana and mother, Barbara J. Williamson.

Rebecca “Becky” Hass Lawing, 67, of Maiden died May 26, 2014.
