Vickie Sellers Lowman

MAIDEN — Vickie Sellers Lowman, age 70, of 307 Springhill Lane, died May 9 2014 at Caromont Medical Center Gastonia. Vickie was born April 18, 1944 in Gaston County a daughter of the late Franklin Cline and Mazel Pauline Brown Sellers. She was retired from Schrum Mfg. and had attended Anthony Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Frankie Sellers and Billie Ann Sellers and brother, Ronnie Sellers.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Cline Lowman (Patricia) of Lincolnton, Jeffery Lowman of Maiden; daughter, Tracy Simmons of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Jeffery Matthew Lowman of Winston Salem, Hannah Faith Philips of Cherryville, Jennifer Abernethy of Hickory and Shannon Wingate of Lincolnton; two great grandchildren; sisters, Patsy Mitchem of Lincolnton, Shelby Sneed of Lincolnton, Sherry Drum of Cherryville, Penny Goins of Lincolnton, and Kimmie Heavner of Lincolnton.

Funeral service will be held this evening at 7:30 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral and Cremation Services in Cherryville with Rev. Leonard Bumgardner officiating. Burial will be private at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gabriel McGarrett Smith

Gabriel McGarrett Smith infant son of Megan Faith Smith died on May 8, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Nathan Grooms officiating.  Family and friends will gather at the home of Jean Herman on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 3 p.m.

Survivors include mother, Megan Faith Smith of the home; maternal grandparents Ray and Debra Smith of the home; one aunt, Kesha Smith Huss and husband Trent of Lincolnton; one cousin, Dixie Jean Huss; one great grandfather, John David Ingle of Lincolnton; several great aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gabriel was preceded in death his maternal great grandmother, Betty Smith Ingle and great grandfather Everette Lee Goins; maternal great grandparents, Colleen Edwards Smith and Willard Plez Smith.

Gassie Ray Gilbert

DENVER — Gassie Ray Gilbert, 87, of Denver died on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Sherrills Ford Hospice House, following a brief illness.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, astute business woman, and world traveler.

Born June 21, 1926 in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late John and Georgia Ray.  Spending her childhood in the mountains of North Carolina; Mrs. Gilbert later moved to Gastonia taking her first job at the historic Firestone Mill.  During her employment there, she was crowned “Miss Firestone” in the company’s annual beauty pageant.  After her marriage to the late Wray Gilbert, they owned and operated Gilbert’s Shoe Store in Lincolnton. It was during this time that Mrs. Gilbert was named Lincolnton’s Business Woman of the Year.  Upon retirement in 1974, Mrs. Gilbert and husband, Wray built and enjoyed their home on Lake Norman.  In their retirement years, the couple traveled extensively throughout the world.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her husband, Wray Hall Gilbert, and brothers, Clint and Burl Ray.

She is survived by one son, Richard Lee Gilbert and wife, Harriette of Sherrills Ford; two grandchildren, Lindsay (Mac) McDowell Gilbert and wife, Leslie of Apex, Blair Gilbert Frazier and husband, Scott of Mooresville; and three great grandchildren, Ashelyn and Juliet Gilbert, and Graham Frazier.  Also surviving is one sister, Gladys Welch of Lincolnton, and two brothers, Hess Ray, of Mo. and Willard Ray of Franklin, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of Sherrills Ford Hospice House for their compassionate and loving care of Mrs. Gilbert during her final days.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Bethphage Lutheran Church with Reverend R. Frederick Mitschke, officiating.  Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

Florene Bryson, 82, of Conover, formerly of Lincolnton, died May 10, 2014.

Lou Ella Williams, 65, of Vale died May 7, 2014.

A service of remembrance was held May 10, 2014 at 2 p.m. at First Freewill Baptist Church in Maiden. Burial followed at Conover City Cemetery.

Gene Wilkinson

Billy “Gene” Wilkinson, 84, of Hickory died May 10, 2014.

A graveside service will be held May 13, 2014 at  2 p.m. at Mtn. View Cemetery in Rutherford College. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.

Donald ‘Donnie’ Arthur Bogert Jr.

Donald “Donnie” Arthur Bogert Jr., 50, of Conover, died May 9, 2014.

A memorial service will be held today at 5 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover. The family will receive friends today following the service in the family life center.

Mary Hazel Watts Rhom

Mary Hazel Watts Rhom, of Stanley died May 9, 2014.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on May 11, 2014 at Warlick Funeral Home.
