Apron workshop cancelled
A Memory Apron Workshop scheduled for today at the Lincoln County Senior Center has been cancelled. A special reception for those involved with the project will take place instead starting 10 a.m. at 514 S. Academy St. on the Gaston College-Lincoln campus in Lincolnton.
Westside House of Prayer will host a fish and chicken fry 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Howards Creek Community Center, 494 Howards Creek Sch. Rd. in Lincolnton. The event will benefit Ricky Auton’s medical expenses. Cost is $8 per plate. Baked goods will also be available for purchase.
West Lincoln High School’s “Rebel” band will sell BBQ chicken plates for $8 apiece 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school, 172 Shoal Rd. in Howards Creek (Lincolnton). Pickup will be in the new gym lobby. Relay for Life
East Lincoln Relay for Life will be 6 p.m. through 9 a.m. Saturday at East Lincoln High School in Denver. A food handout will start 8 a.m. at Pisgah UMC, 2582 Gastonia Hwy. in Lincolnton, in cooperation with Christian Ministry of Lincolnton, Second Harvest Food Bank of Charlotte, Laboratory UMC, and the network churches with the Lincolnton’s Methodist on a Mission group. Food will be handed out to USDA-qualified individuals or SNAP recipients.
National food drive
Publix, AARP and the National Associaton of Letter Carriers is hosting a national Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Donations stay in each community. Lincoln County residents are encouraged to collect and bag non-perishable food items and place them them by the mailbox for a letter carrier to deliver to a local food bank or pantry. Lincoln County Animal Services and volunteers with the Humane Society of Lincoln County will host a rabies clinic 12-4 p.m. at Lincoln Animal Hospital, 2109 E. Main St. in Lincolnton. Cost is $7 per shot. Non-Lincoln County residents are also welcome. One-year and three-year shots will be given. Attendants are asked to bring proof of animal’s current rabies vaccination. There is no limit on number of animals.
Library butterfly party
The Lincoln County Public Library will host a “Fancy Nancy Butterfly Party” 3-4:30 p.m. at the Florence Shanklin Library, 7837 Fairfield Forest Rd. in Denver and at the West Lincoln Library, 5545 W. Free student heart screenings
Registration is open through today (Sunday) for students interested in a free heart health screening with Carolinas Healthcare System May 17 at Lincoln Medical Plaza, McAlister Rd. in Lincolnton. Schools participating in “Heart of a Champion Day” include all four Lincoln County public high schools and Lincoln Charter. Doctors will look for heart defects not checked for during routine athletic screenings as well as orthopedic and general medical screenings.
