Albert Franklin Homesley

IRON STATION — Albert Franklin Homesley, age 78, of Iron Station, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

His funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Pearl Baptist Church with Rev. Malcolm Ivey officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Homesley was born July 24, 1935, in Lincoln County, to the late John Jacob and Edna Marie Cloninger Homesley. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, John Martin Homesley, and siblings Marie Fourshee, John Henry “Bud” Homesley, Pauline Brown, Grover Cleveland Homesley, Lucille Chronister, Mandy Homesley, Robert Homesley, Inez Rhyne, and father and mother-in-law Waverly “Lefty” and Beulah Richard. He served in the United States Air Force and then later worked for Carboloy Tools/GE.

He is survived by wife, Shirley Richard Homesley of the home; daughter, Tina H. Ruprecht and husband Mark of Chesterfield, Mich.; sister, Lillian H. Sain of Lincolnton; granddaughter, Erica Smith and husband Kevin of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; and special niece and nephew, Sherry and Dennis Strange and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Donald Douglas Abernethy

Donald Douglas Abernethy, 82, of Lincolnton passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Carolina’s Medical Center Lincoln.

Born August 8, 1931 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ernest Glenn Abernethy and Lottie Shaw Abernethy. Don was a member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church in Maiden and devoted his life to public service with an impact of making the world a better place. He served his country in the Korean War, and returned to complete degrees from both Lenoir Rhyne University and Duke University. Don began his long career in public education as a Teacher-Principal at Catawba Elementary. He was Principal at Wallace-Rose Hill High School, Wallace and Hoke High School, Raeford. He continued his educational career as Director of Student Teaching at Pembroke State University. Don later returned to the Hoke County School system as Superintendent where he led one of the first integration of a public school system in North Carolina. This is an accomplishment that he, his family, and friends are most proud of. Don served as Chief of Staff in US Congress and finished his working career at Christian Tours.

In addition to his parents, three brothers, Ernest, Frank and William “Bill” Abernethy preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife of 57 years, Iris Gregg Abernethy; four sons, Donald Douglas Jr. of Asheville, Jeffrey Glenn Abernethy and wife, Heather of Stuart, Fla., Robert Fulton Abernethy and wife, Pam of Lincolnton, Jonathan Lloyd Abernethy of Lincolnton; one daughter, Beth Abernethy Kerrigan and husband, Chris of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Tony Abernethy of Newton; five sisters, Glenda Frazier of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nancy Sherrill of Maiden, Darlene Lockman of Newton, Diane Hendrix of Sherrills Ford, Norma York, Newton; nine grandchildren, Joseph, Stephen, Nina, David, Erin, Anna, Sara, Collin, Mary Katherine; two great-grandchildren, Breanna and Kaitlyn.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church in Maiden with Pastor Jim Mathews and Pastor Bob Combs officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Faye Rhyne Crump Ross

Faye Rhyne Crump Ross, age 75, of 272 McAlister Road in Lincolnton, died on Monday, May 5, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Molly Vanderwerken officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ms. Ross was born August 13, 1938, in Mecklenburg County, to the late Harvey and Virginia Rhyne Crump. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Crump and Richard Crump. She worked in textiles.

She is survived by a son, James Robert Ross Jr. of Lincolnton; a daughter, Katherine Ross Locklin of Lincolnton; two brothers, Harry Crump and Paul Crump, both of Lincolnton; three sisters, Joyce McCurry of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Margie Hamrick of Forest City, and Brenda Mathis of Newton; four grandchildren, Jessica Ross Hawn and husband Matthew, Jana Ross, Richard Locklin and wife Summer, and Brandon Locklin; and one great-grandson, Bryan Newton.

Ethel ‘Virginia’ Dills Holland

MAIDEN — Ethel “Virginia” Dills Holland, 87, of Maiden passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.

Born February 5, 1927 in Macom Co., she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Lillie Mae Keener Dills. In addition to her parents, husband of 64 years, Howard Alexander Holland; two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include, three sons, Howard Holland Jr. of Newton, Grover Holland of Va.; Walter Holland of Newton; four daughters, Patsy Lawrence of Maiden, Evelyn Hall of Sylvia, Lula Mae Brooks of Lincolnton, Floyce Carriker of China Grove; one brother, Issac Dills of Franklin; one sister, Melba Watts of Crestview, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held May 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with Pastor Gary Saunders and Pastor Kenny Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frances Lloyd Bryant

MAIDEN — Frances Lloyd Bryant, age 84, of 216 S. Carolina Avenue in Maiden, died on Monday, May 5, 2014.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Charles Kyker officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bryant was born February 5, 1930, in New Hanover County to the late Francis Keith and Margarette Bishop Lloyd. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Roscoe Bryant, and a sister, Jackie Ellie. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three sons, David Bryant of Monroe, Bobby Bryant of Va., and Steven Bryant of Raleigh; four daughters, Linda Price of Wilmington, Brenda Harris of Maiden, Emily B. Melton and Jessica Miller, both of Maiden; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Bryant Lawing Jr.

Charles Bryant Lawing Jr. age 79, of 1101 Jennifer Lane in Cherryville, died on Sunday, May 4, 2014.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hollybrook Cemetery with DAV military rites. Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner will officiate. The family received friends at the home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

Mr. Lawing was born February 26, 1935, in Caldwell County, to the late Charles Bryant Lawing Sr. and Flossie Rudisill Lawing. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Lawing Carswell. He served in the United States Navy, member of the American Legion and VFW, and owned and operated Lawing’s Men’s Shop with his father in downtown Lincolnton for many years. He later retired from ownership of Jansen’s Cleaning Service.

He is survived by his wife, Anice Bumgarner Lawing of the home; two daughters, Laura Helms and husband Kenny of Cherryville and Tricia Thornton of Sherrills Ford; granddaughter, Hunter Helms; and grandson, Brandon Helms.

Bobby James Sisk

Mr. Bobby James Sisk, age 81, of 2444 Country Club Road in Lincolnton, died on Monday, May 5, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jaie Warlick officiating.

Mr. Sisk was born April 19, 1933, in Lincoln County, to the late Roy and Nellie Houk Sisk. He worked in construction.

He is survived by his wife Louise “Lou” Sisk of the home; two daughters, Wendy Angle of Lincolnton and Ramona Payseur of Iron Station; brother, Graham Sisk of Vale; and four grandchildren, Jeff Angle, Kristen Howard, Cole Angle, and Duncan Angle.

Leona Estell Little Lawing, 91, of Newton died May 4, 2014.

A memorial service will be held May 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, Newton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

Stephen “Steve” Ray Sims Sr., 72, of Maiden died May 4, 2014.

Memorial services will be held today at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Maiden.  The family received friends May 6, 2014 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the church.

Robert Lewis Barrett

Robert Lewis Barrett, 76, died April 28, 2014.

Funeral services will be held today at noon at Carpenter’s Funeral & Cremation Services, Cherryville. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.  Military honors by Cherryville American Legion Post #100 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

William “Bill” Herman Roberts, 84, of Maiden died May 4, 2014.

The funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden. Entombment will be at Catawba Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post 16 of Newton. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Coyte Cline Witherspoon, 80, of Harmony died May 4, 2014.

A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church, Newton. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Rawlings Haggard Cathey, 92, Lincolnton died May 4, 2014.

A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.

Jeffrey Hinson, 54, of Lincolnton died on May 6, 2014.

Funeral service will be May 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with burial to follow in Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Anthony Gerard Simonetti, 83, of Lincolnton died May 5, 2014.

John Mark Eaker

John Mark Eaker died May 5, 2014.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the home of John Eaker, 610 Roy Eaker Rd. Cherryville.  A memorial service will be held May 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cherryville. Burial will be private at a later date.
