A man receiving housing assistance from a Lincoln County family was jailed Wednesday after confessing to deputies that he sexually assaulted a 7-year-old resident during his stay at the home.

Clay Allen Rudisill, 51, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. after officers located him walking along Springs East Road in Lincolnton, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

He had been living with a local family helping him “through hard times,” according to an agency press release.

Rudisill, who previously lived in Cherryville, admitted to deputies that he sexually assaulted the child victim, the release said.

The suspect was charged with one felony count of first-degree sexual offense of a victim under 13 years old and jailed under a $75,000 secured bond.

He is set to make a first appearance in the case today, deputies said.

Deputies who assisted in the investigation included patrol officers M. Hargrave and A. Helms along with Det. Sally Dellinger and Major Crimes Unit head, Det. Lt. Tim Johnson.
