Rebels down Crest, reach semis

LINCOLN TIMES-NEWS

Matt Bumgarner doubled home the tying run then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and Chandler Jenkins closed to door as West Lincoln upset Shelby Crest 7-6 Monday in the opening round of the 2014 Shelby FCA Easter Baseball Tournament at Shelby High School.
The win set up the Rebels with a semifinal game today against South Caldwell, a 3-0 winner over Shelby, at 7:30 p.m.
West Lincoln (8-10-1) led 5-2 before the Chargers (10-6) rallied to tie with three runs in the fifth. Crest took the lead in the sixth on Luke Patrick’s bunt.
Sam High singled in the sixth, moved to second on Alec Johnson’s sac bunt, then scored on Bumgarner’s double to left to tie it at 5. Bumgarner then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from Matt Bridges.
Jenkins got a pop-up then walked Ben Canipe before moving him to second with a wild pitch. But the left-hander got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat and pick up his second save this year.
Johnson gave up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, walked two and struck out five in five innings before being pulled for Caleb Adams in the sixth. Adam gave up one run on two walks with a strikeout in the win.
Cody Dellinger (hit, walk, run), Tommy Garwood (two runs), Jenkins (hit, two RBIs), Charles Mack George (2-for-3, two RBIs, run), High (2-for-3, RBI) and Bumgarner (2-for-3, RBI, two runs) led West Lincoln.
A win today against South Caldwell and the Rebels will play the Kings Mountain-Lawndale Burns winner at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship. A loss, and they will face that game’s loser Thursday at 5 p.m. in the third place game.
Kings Mountain advanced with a 12-2, six-inning win over Forest City Chase junior varsity. Burns advanced with a 7-4 win over Chase varsity.
Kings Mountain and Burns play their semifinal today at 5 p.m.
