Billy Gene “The Wizard” Abernethy

CHERRYVILLE — Billy Gene “The Wizard” Abernethy, 79 of 103 Terrace Dr., died Friday April 18, 2014. He was born in Lincoln co. on June 6, 1934 a son of the late Joseph P. and Cordia Lynn Abernethy.

Mr. Abernethy proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War, member of American Legion Post #100 where he was Athletic director for 26, years, inducted into the American Legion Sports Hall of Fame, Cherryville Sports Hall of Fame, and Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.  The Wizard played for World Champion Howards Furniture Softball Team, played in the Cherryville City League softball, owner of Bill’s Wholesale for 40 years and longtime member of First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Clara Peeler Abernethy, four children Rebecca Abernethy Schwindeman and husband Dr. James of Belmont, Tim Abernethy of the home, Robin Abernethy Costner and husband Don of Shelby, and Jon Abernethy and wife Jennifer of Cherryville, grandchildren Lee Barnett and wife Rebecca, Mallory Patrie and husband Toby, Christopher Smith and wife Ashlee, Kelsey Grant and husband Jon, Macy Abernethy, Paul Schwindeman, John Schwindeman, and Noah Abernethy and great grandchildren Caleb, Evelyn, Zoie, Letty and Neviah.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner officiating with burial to follow in City Memorial Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #100 Honor Guard. The family received friends Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Carpenters Funeral and Cremation Services from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at other times at the home.

John Dylan Ferguson

DENVER — John Dylan Ferguson age 22, of 3848 Bryn Mar Lane in Denver died April 19, 2014.

Dylan was born February 28, 1992 in Mecklenburg County.   He was serving an apprenticeship as a stockbroker in financial advising.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at The Cove Church in Mooresville with Rev. Larry Faulk officiating.

Survivors include his father, Jay Ferguson of Denver; his mother, Deborah Ferguson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Jayme Ferguson of Huntersville, Wendy Turcotte of Sherrills Ford, Terra Easters of N.C.; grandfather, Harry Sidway of Mooresville; and grandmother, Jean Ferguson of Christmas, Fla.

Alan Talton Hales

Mr. Alan Talton Hales, age 52, of 4773 Westwinds Road in Lincolnton, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Southside Baptist Church, 917 Carolina Road, in Suffolk,Va. Pastor Jerry McCloud will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.

Alan was born May 25, 1961, in Portsmouth, Va. to the late Arthur Thurman and Betty Lou Smith Hales. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Sharon Ratta and Terri Lynn Hales; and a brother, Robert Williford. He was a production manager in the corrugated container business where he worked for 30 years. Alan had a special mentor, Ed Wilson, who helped him in his career path.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie Evans Hales of the home; daughter, Amanda Lynn Morton and husband Earl of Gates County; two sisters, Belinda Bryant and husband Wyville, and Carron Hales, all of Chesapeake, Va.; brother, Tony Hales of Chesapeake, Va.; a very special granddaughter, Baylee Morton; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jerry Lee Beam

Jerry Lee Beam, 67, of Kings Mountain died April 18, 2014. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carpenter’s Funeral and Cremation Services.

 

Junior Austin

Grover Junior Austin, 73, of Vale died April 18, 2014.

Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home. The funeral service will be April 22, 2014 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Bible Gospel Baptist Church Cemetery.

John David Kilby

Mr. John David Kilby, 76, of Cherryville died April 19, 2014.

Visitation will be held on April 23, 2014 from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on April 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Cherryville.  Burial will be at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
