Spring break is here, and this year all but three area teams are taking a break from competing in an Easter tournament.
Varsity baseball teams from East Lincoln and West Lincoln, and North Lincoln’s softball teams are the only teams competing in a tournament-type event. East Lincoln will play three games in three days against teams from Ohio at the Ripken Experience baseball complex in Myrtle Beach, West Lincoln will play three games in the Shelby Invitational Baseball Tournament, and North Lincoln will play three games in two days in a softball tournament at Cherryville.
The Mustangs will leave for the Grand Strand today and will face St. Charles (Ohio) at 6 p.m. On Tuesday they will face St. Francis de Sales (Ohio) at 3 p.m., and on Wednesday they will face Padua Franciscan (Ohio) at noon.
The Rebels will open their tournament at 4 p.m. today against top-seeded Crest. If they win they will face the Shelby-South Caldwell winner at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. If they lose they will face that game’s loser at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. West Lincoln is guaranteed a third game on Friday, with time and opponent depending on the outcomes of its first two games.
The Knights are part of a five-team softball tournament at Cherryville, and will play Bessemer City at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and the host school at 6 p.m. North Lincoln wraps up the event with a 2 p.m. game on Wednesday against Hibriten. North Gaston is also in the event.
Lincolnton is not hosting a baseball tournament this year. Instead, the Wolves will play North Lincoln in a home-and-home series beginning today at Lincolnton, with Tuesday’s games at North Lincoln. Both will be a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
The only other games scheduled according to schedules reported to the Lincoln Times-News is East Lincoln’s girls soccer team will play a pair of matches down east on Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs will play at Holly Ridge Dixon on Friday and at Newport Croatan on Saturday.
EAST LINCOLN 13, NEWTON-CONOVER 2, 5 INN.: At East Lincoln, the Mustangs scored nine runs in the fourth inning to put away the Red Devils in a Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference game on Friday.
Booth Braswell (2-for-4, run), Taylor Wilson (hit, three runs), Kaelyn Edwards (2-for-2, double, two RBIs), Delanghy Burke (hit), Heidi Parker (hit, run), Sarah Thompson (2-for-4, triple, RBI, two runs), Kaley Reel (hit, RBI) and Payton Mills (hit, RBI) led the Mustangs. Braswell gave up two runs on four hits, walked five and struck out four in the win.
East Lincoln (10-6, 8-3) travels to Maiden on April 29.
ALEXANDER CENTRAL TOURNAMENT POSTPONED: Alexander Central’s Tiffany Crouse Memorial Softball Celebration, which involved Lincoln Charter, was postponed Saturday due to rain. The event will tentatively be made up on May 3, an Alexander Central spokesman said in a press release.
NL JV TOURNAMENT POSTPONED: Saturday’s Lincoln County junior varsity tournament at North Lincoln was postponed, and is tentatively rescheduled for May 3, North Lincoln Athletic Director Jon Carpenter said.
