LCSO: Man used pry bar to steal cash from register

Staff Writer

Deputies are looking for a man they said used a pry bar to open a store cash register on the county’s eastern end and steal a bag of money early Monday morning.

A store employee at the Wal-Mart on N.C. 16 in Denver told officers she spotted the black man crouched down near a rarely-used store register as she returned to her own register after a break.

She instantly grew suspicious of the man, whom she told deputies appeared to be pretending to look at a candy rack beside the register.

The incident took place just before 3 a.m., the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

After the employee walked closer to the man, she spotted the drawer to the cash register open, prompting the suspect to flee the store with a bag of money, according to an agency press release.

The man left the scene in a black Nissan Altima with a license plate located on both the front and back, deputies said.

A crowd of store employees chased after the alleged thief but was unable to stop him.

Officers believe the man may be connected to a similar robbery that happened hours earlier at the Wal-Mart store in Charlotte, near the University area.

Store surveillance at the Lincoln County Wal-Mart was recorded wearing a ball cap, black or navy blue sweatshirt and khaki pants, deputies said.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Det. Thomas Laverde at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at (704) 732-9050 or the Lincoln County Communications Center at (704) 735-8202.
