S. Ray Lowder Elementary received an Exemplar School status at the Exceptional Children Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s annual Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support Initiative Workshop and Recognition earlier this month.
According to the school’s press release, the initiative focuses on keeping students engaged and maintaining and healthy, productive school environment. PBIS is designed to serve as a framework of intervention practices, decision-making tools and organizational systems used to establish the positive and productive learning environment needed for all students to achieve success. The release said schools that fully implement PBIS can expect to manage behavior more efficiently and consistently, decrease negative behavior and witness a positive change in school climate.
In order to earn recognition, schools were required to submit multiple reports documenting that they met implementation criteria. Since 2008, S. Ray Lowder Elementary has participated in the statewide initiative, working to improve PBIS implementation through ongoing evaluation.
