Nelie Smith ‘Bets’ Brittain

Nelie Smith “Bets” Brittain, a member of Wilkies’ Grove Baptist Church, passed into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 after 10 months of declining health. She was 100 years and 7 months old. She lived at Trinity Ridge West Nursing Home of Hickory and was called “Mom” by most of the people there.

Born August 5, 1913 in Catawba County, she was the last of the eleven children of the late Harrison and Minnie Catherine Burns Smith (1880-1965).

In the first 50 years of her life, she and her late husband, Elmer Brittain (1911-1991), worked full time for Brown Knitting Company of Hickory, and full time at the family farm providing food, clothing, and raising 10 healthy children. In the second 50 years of her life, she traveled to visit family out west, continued to farm, made first quality molasses and quilts, loved to play bingo and solitaire, and participated in the early life of 22 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren. She was frequently heard to yell, “Get out of the mud!” from the back window of the house, to children who were invariably in the mud.

She is survived by all ten of her children, Paul Hildebran and his wife, Lena of Hickory, Joan Stephens and her late husband, Clarence of Hickory, Lois Brittain and her late husband, Forest of Lincolnton, Robert “Blackie” Brittain and his late wife, Carol of Hickory, Virginia Foster and her husband, Dick of Wyoming, Dorothy Tallent and her late husband, Samuel of Hickory, Emily Lowman and her husband, Ray of Hickory, Elmer “Bud” Brittain Jr. and his wife, Shirley of Hickory, Nellie Peterson and her husband, Bob of Minnesota, and Juanita Sigmon and her husband, Don of Hickory.

Nelie contributed her long life to hard work. Her long life is a testament to having a purpose of accomplishment each day.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Wilkies’ Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Terry Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to services from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Alice Catherine “Cat” Christopher Devine

Alice Catherine “Cat” Christopher Devine, age 72, of 231 Westview Drive in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlene Hutchings officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Devine was born December 7, 1941, in Catawba County to the late John Calvin and Lillie Viola Newton Christopher. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Maybel Christopher and a brother, Calvin Christopher. She worked as a welder for Vermont American and loved gardening and coloring.

She is survived by her husband, Judson Devine of the home; six sisters, Joann Killian and husband Frank of Maiden, Majel Moser of Lincolnton, Becky Christopher of Newton, Linda Fulbright of Conover, Janice Kiser of Statesville, and Kay McGee and husband Tim of Conover; and three brothers, Johnny Christopher and wife Carolyn of Catawba County, Roger Christopher of Lincolnton, and Kenneth Christopher of Hickory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Laboratory United Methodist Church, 2896 Laboratory Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Charlotte Jeraldine Sellers Lindsay

Oct. 19, 1939 – Mar. 16, 2014

Charlotte Jeraldine Sellers Lindsay, 74, of Laundry St., Kannapolis, departed this earthly life on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Transitional Health Services.

She was born October 19, 1939 in Lincoln County to the late Arthur J. Sellers and the late Charlotte McLean Sellers.

Charlotte was educated in the public schools of Lincoln County and was employed with Fieldcrest Cannon for 35 years.  She was a member of Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Rose Hill Baptist Church, 216 Rice Street, Kannapolis, NC 28083. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 3 p.m.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodus Lindsay, and a brother, Arthur N. Sellers.

Those left to cherish fond memories include three sons, Jeffrey Sellers (Mary) of Lincolnton, Wallace Lindsay of Kannapolis, Theodus Lindsay (Jay) of Davidson; two daughters, Pennie Vannoy (Dwight) of Salisbury, Burnetta Washington (Gregory) of Kannapolis; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Delores Banks (Clarence) of Kannapolis; one sister-in-law, Lena Sellers of Lincolnton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pamela Joy Byrd Reeves

Pamela Joy Byrd Reeves, age 62, of 715 Sunridge Drive in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Bill Bigham officiating.

Mrs. Reeves was born June 17, 1951, in Clinton to Rebecca Craig Byrd and the late L.G. Byrd. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. David Allen Reeves. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, David Allen Reeves Jr. of Lincolnton and Brian Byrd Reeves of Mooresville; her mother, Rebecca C. Byrd of Lincolnton; two sisters, Diane Byrd Nale of Lincolnton and Amy Byrd Reinhardt of Hickory; a grandson, Asher Finley Reeves; two nieces; and three nephews.

Memorials may be made to Boger City Baptist Church, 2201 E. Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Michael Eugene Dillard

Michael Eugene Dillard, 67, of Maiden died March 18, 2014.

A graveside service with military grave rites will be held today at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens, Union, S.C. The family received friends Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Maiden.

Joe Thomas Williams

Joe Thomas Williams, 74, of Vale died March 16, 2014.

A funeral service will be held March 23, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the burial to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Peggy Donahue Smith

Peggy Donahue Smith, 53, of Lincolnton died March 18, 2014.

Visitation will be held today from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton.

Harold Heavner

Mr. Harold Heavner, age 83, of Vale, died March 20, 2014.
