Clara Belle Hardin Blackwell
Mrs. Clara Belle Hardin Blackwell age 93, of The Brian Center in Lincolnton and formerly of Norman Fair Avenue died Saturday, March 1, 2014.
Mrs. Blackwell was born February 18, 1921 in Rutherford County. She was the daughter of the late Claude Hardin and Ethel Goforth Hardin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Reece Blackwell Sr. and infant grandson, Richard Bradley Blackwell. Clara was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton serving on various organizations. She loved her church family including her trips with the seniors.
Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Lincolnton. Rev. David Wyant will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Philathia classroom at the church from 2 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will be at Hollybrook Cemetery.
Survivors include, sons, William Reece Blackwell Jr. and wife, Cheryl of Chapel Hill and Rick Blackwell and wife, Patty of Lincolnton; daughter, Jane Blackwell Lawing and husband, Ronnie of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Jonathan Blackwell and wife Kristin, Chris Blackwell, Brian Blackwell, Jason Blackwell and wife Kerry, Dylan Lawing, Kara Lawing; great grandchildren, Avery Lauren Blackwell, Calvin Reece Blackwell and Mia Brynn Blackwell

Alfred Eugene Martin
Alfred Eugene Martin, 83, of Denver passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Carolina’s Medical Center Lincoln, Lincolnton.
Born in Oconee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Garnette and Minnie O’Kelly Martin. He was a member and greeter at Mount Anderson Baptist Church in Maiden and was the husband of Doris Bond Martin. He was a retired builder for Duke Energy.
In addition to his parents, a son, Alfred Stanley Martin and brother, Robert Martin preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife of 60 years, Doris Martin of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Rahn Painter of Denver; grandchildren, Rhonda Martin and fiancee’ Andrew Dellinger and daughter, Madison; Chastity and Brian McRee and Afton, Chad Painter, Haylie and J.R. Rembert and Easton, Kenley and Silas; Autumn and Jerrod Lutz and Madie and Darla; brothers, Donnie Martin and family, Kenneth Martin and family, Junior Martin and family and Mike Martin and family; sisters, Judy Crowe and family, Sandra Whitt and family all of S.C.; special family, Buster and Kim Knight, Wayne and Christy Knight, Chris and Kali Knight and children, Addie and Makela Knight, Lynne, Tim and Chera Pardue.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Alfred will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Mount Anderson Baptist Church in Maiden with Rev. Donald Cline and Rev. Charles Ingle officiating. Visitation will be held, prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the church.

Earl Caldwell White Jr.
STANLEY — Mr. Earl Caldwell White Jr., age 88, of 7696 Turnberry Lane, Stanley died Saturday, March 1, 2014 after a short illness.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver with Rev. Carol Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service.
A lifelong resident of Charlotte, Mr. White was born on July 11, 1925 at Presbyterian Hospital. He was the son of the late Earl C. White Sr. and Hannah Dotson White. Raised on Princeton Avenue, he had fond memories of hunting in what is now Freedom Park. After graduating from Central High School he served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the submarine USS Lapon. Upon his return to the states, he attended NC State and became a surveyor for Duke Power. Soon thereafter he married Pauline Furr in 1948. He joined Carolinas Auto Supply House in the early 50’s where he worked for over 50 years. He was President for over 30 years. At the time of his death he was serving as Chairman of the Board. He was a Deacon and an Elder of Unity Presbyterian Church and also active in both Meals on Wheels and the East Lincoln Christian Ministry. He authored a book Carolina Riverboats and Rivers in 2002 outlining the little told tale of canals and steamboats in the Carolinas. He was also a woodworker, an extensive traveler to over 60 countries, a member of the Lake Norman Power Squadron and an active tennis player competing against the august talents of the Dilworth Tennis Group. He taught himself celestial navigation and at one time owned a 32 foot sailboat.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Furr White of the home; two sons, Brent White and wife, Pat of Charlotte and Alan White and wife, Jennifer of Davidson; three daughters, Glynn Strabel and husband, Ed of Palmer, Alaska, Cynthia Cameron and husband, William of Clinton, and Ann Warren and husband, Joseph of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one brother, Richard White of Charlotte; one sister, Shirley Benfield of Charlotte; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
