VALE –– A tight, competitive pitchers’ duel quickly turned into a one sided affair Friday evening as the Cherryville Ironmen defeated the West Lincoln Rebels 14-1 in five innings.
Cherryville’s Alston Mosteller and the Rebels’ Kenny Stevens had limited their opponent to a single run in a 1-1 tie heading into the fifth.
Back-to-back singles from Caleb Narron and Dillon Harris to start the Cherryville fifth resulted in a pitching change. Unfortunately for the Rebels (0-2), the call to the bullpen didn’t slow down the Ironmen offense, as they pushed across 13 runs in the inning on nine hits.
Mosteller and Narron collected two hits apiece in the fifth inning alone, and Kacee Buff and Austin Wilkinson each delivered two-run singles for Cherryville as it improved to 1-1.
Mosteller scored on Buff’s RBI single back in the second inning to give the Ironmen an early 1-0 lead, but West Lincoln answered in the third when Ashton Rana followed Alec Johnson’s double with a run-scoring single to tie the game.
Defensively, the Rebels committed four errors, two of which helped to extend the 13-run, decisive fifth inning.
Mosteller picked up the win on the mound for Cherryville, going all five innings while allowing just one run. He also led the Ironmen offense, going 4-for-4 and scoring three times.
Stevens took the loss for West Lincoln, allowing three runs on six hits in four-plus innings of work. Caleb Adams and Matt Bumgarner pitched in relief for the Rebels.
The Rebels will be back in action tonight when they travel to Fred T. Foard. Game time is set for 6:30. Cherryville will play at North Gaston on Wednesday.
