Lincoln Charter’s varsity girls basketball team did something no other team had done in school history on Saturday –– it won a conference title.
Caitlin Miller scored 19 points and the Eagles routed visiting Community School of Davidson 57-25 to clinch the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference regular season title for the first such championship in school history.
Madi Neesmith scored 10 points and Eboni Tinsley added 10 as Lincoln Charter (19-1, 11-0) broke an 8-all tie after the first quarter and outscored CSD (8-10, 7-5) 49-17 the rest of the way.
Not only did the win give the Eagles the league championship, but it also gave them the league’s No. 1 playoff seed for the upcoming state playoffs.
The game, which was postponed to Tuesday last week, was played on its originally-scheduled date after last week’s winter storm didn’t pose a threat to travel.
Lincoln Charter’s boys also picked up a league win, downing Community School of Davidson 59-45 after outscoring it 21-13 in the final quarter.
Amir Davis and Jaylan Lewis scored 13 points each, and Kevin Walsh added 12 for the Eagles (8-15, 3-8).
Lincoln Charter will finish its regular season today at Pine Lake Prep. The league will open its tournament on Wednesday at the higher seed, with Lincoln Charter’s girls earning a first round bye. The semifinals and finals will be held at Cherryville on Thursday and Friday.
The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A and North Piedmont 3A/4A conferences will also wrap up their regular seasons today, and will begin their tournaments on Tuesday at the higher seeds.
The SD-7 semifinals and finals will be held at Catawba Valley Community College Wednesday-Friday. The NP3A/4A semifinals and finals will be held at Alexander Central, also Wednesday-Friday.
