Belk stores tackle heart disease

A regional department store is working to raise awareness for the leading cause of death in the country — heart disease.

Belk stores in 16 states across the South are hosting a variety of in-store events and activities during the month of February, and Belk’s “Our Heart to Yours” website offers online interactive heart health educational experience throughout the month. Their Lincolnton location is among the stores participating in the campaign, which benefits the American Heart Association (AHA) and its “My Heart. My Life.” initiative to promote health, wellness and fitness and increase heart disease awareness and education.

“Our whole goal is to raise awareness for heart disease and support the organization,” Belk Representative Pam Caudle said. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans.”

Earlier this month, the store offered 20-percent-off coupons good for the purchase of three single sale-priced items to those who donated $1 or more to the American Heart Association. Donors were then able to express their love to a friend or family member with a personalized paper heart. The wall of hearts will be displayed throughout the campaign.

The initiative continues on Tuesday, Feb. 25 as customers will have the opportunity to learn the importance of healthy living.

“We’re inviting customers to shop and learn about healthy living,” Caudle said. “Belk will mail our customers a healthy living letter as well as 20 percent off their purchase of regular and/or sale priced items. The letter and the coupon is a way to show our support to our customers and healthy living, and to drive traffic into the store.”

The department store will host a guest speaker as well as a demonstration utilizing the kitchen electric and healthy living recipes. Free samples will also be provided. At this time, Caudle said the event is expected to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Lincolnton location.
