Chazz Surratt scored 31 points for the second straight game –– and night –– and East Lincoln used a huge second quarter to stave off upset-minded Lincolnton 71-63 in a Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference boys basketball game on Wednesday night in Denver.
The Wolves (7-12, 4-7) led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Mustangs (18-2, 9-2) answered by outscoring Lincolnton 23-8 in the second.
Surratt was 19-of-19 from the free throw line, had 14 rebounds and six steals to tie his career high he set the night before in a win over previously league-unbeaten Newton-Conover.
Sage Surratt scored 12 points and Mason Leach added 11 for East Lincoln.
Will Saine led Lincolnton with 13 points, Quinlyn Harris scored 12 points and Colby Pridmore added 11 points.
The Mustangs, who are a game behind the Red Devils in the loss column and tied for second with West Caldwell (13-6, 9-2), travel to Lenoir tonight to break the tie with the Warriors.
West Caldwell defeated East Lincoln 73-69 on Jan. 16. In that game the Warriors lost an 18-point second half lead.
West Caldwell and the Mustangs have two regular season games left after tonight while Newton-Conover (15-4, 9-1), which hosts Lincolnton tonight, has three games next week.
THOMAS JEFFERSON ACADEMY 69, LINCOLN CHARTER 61: At Thomas Jefferson, the Eagles had one bad quarter and it cost them their upset bid of the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference leader.
Amir Davis scored 16 points, Jordan Miller scored 15 and Christian Hilty added 11 for Lincoln Charter, which was outscored 23-14 in the second quarter. The Eagles (7-15, 2-8) actually won the other three quarters combined, 47-46.
The Gryphons improved to 14-4 overall, 9-0 in league play. They travel to Community School of Davidson tonight while Lincoln Charter is off.
