West Lincoln was able to eke by its first round opponent in the NCHSAA state 2A dual-team wrestling playoffs. But getting by its next foe was a different story.
The Rebels edged North Surry 36-34 in the opening round of a four-team pod at Monroe High School, but then fell to Thomasville, 40-27, in the second round on Tuesday night to have their team season come to an end.
Jake Clary, Robbie Hallman, Hunter Carpenter, Nathan Ward, Dustin Headrick, Charles Mack George and Andres Gonzalez won their respective matches to give the Rebels (35-10) eight of the 14 bouts.
Against Thomasville, West Lincoln won just five matches (Ward, Headrick, Matthew Poteat, George and Gonzalez) while the Bulldogs took the 106- through 132-pound weight classes.
Thomasville (40-4) will face Hunter Huss (11-6) in the third round on Thursday. That match’s winner will face the winner of Newton-Conover and West Caldwell –– teams that finished first and second in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference –– for the regional title and the right to advance to the state championship on Saturday.
Up next for the Rebels is the individual 2A Western Regionals, which will be held at Black Mountain Owen Feb. 14-15, beginning at 5:30 p.m. the first day.
The individual regionals pit the top 16 individuals in each weight class based on overall individual win percentage. The top four from each weight class advances to the state championships, which will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum Feb. 20-22.
