Maiden police warn about scam

Maiden police are warning area residents about phone scammers pretending to be town employees seeking utility payments.
Maiden electric and utility customers told officers they’ve received calls this month from people stating they are with the Town of Maiden.
The callers claim the customers are behind on power payments and will be disconnected if they don’t pay immediately, police said.
The calls have come from a toll free “1-800” number, which officers noted town employees do not use.
The Town of Maiden additionally does not require utility payments over-the-phone, law enforcement officials said.
Police encouraged individuals who have been targeted or received such calls to hang-up and report the incident to town officials by calling (828) 428-5002.
