Staff report

Lincolnton High School honored one of its own before a basketball game Friday night. Varsity boys basketball head coach and U.S. History Teacher Bob Cowie was recognized as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Regional Teacher of the Year.

According to the Veterans of Foreign Wars website, the organization annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, middle and high school teachers who “teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively.” Prime candidates include teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism.

During his speech, District 14 Chaplain and Scholarship Chairperson Jerry Vintineer said Cowie received the award based on his excellence in teaching Americanism. Lincolnton High School Principal Heath Belcher nominated Cowie for the award.

“I feel very pleased about receiving this award,” Cowie said. “It really emphasizes the support and help I’ve had along the way from principals, staff and outstanding students.”
