Mary Louise Sain Abernethy

VALE — Mrs. Mary Louise Sain Abernethy, age 92, of Howards Creek Mill Road died Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Her funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Messiah United Methodist church with Rev. Kevin Miller and Rev. Linda Stack-Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. today prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Abernethy was born on March 1, 1931 in Lincoln County to the late Augustus Benjamin and Hattie Louise Heavner Sain. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husband, William David “Dave” Abernethy; one daughter, Betty Louise Abernethy Warlick; granddaughter, Deborah Shelene “Shelly” Abernethy Scronce. She was a life long member of Zion and Messiah Methodist Church. She worked in textiles, enjoyed Messiah United Methodist Church Women, Lincoln County Home Extension Club and LINC Route for 25 years. Mrs. Abernethy’s real love was her family and church.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy A. Carpenter and husband John of Laurinburg; son-in-law, William R. Warlick of Lincolnton and son, Max Abernethy of Vale; numerous grandchildren;, great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Messiah United Methodist Church, 4102 Highway 27 West, Lincolnton, NC 28092, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Sheila Fahy Rutledge

Sheila Fahy Rutledge, 55, of Crouse was called home to heaven on Saturday, January 11, 2014 after a strong and courageous battle against unrelenting Myelodysplastic Syndrome.

Funeral services for Sheila will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Crouse United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home.

Sheila touched many lives over her 32 years of teaching special needs children in both South Carolina and North Carolina, retiring from Lincoln County Schools in July of 2012.  She was recognized by the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Fraternal Order of Police as Teacher of the Year in 2005.  She earned her National Board Certification in 2006 and was recognized by the State of North Carolina as Lincoln County’s Exceptional Children’s Teacher of Excellence in 2006.  Sheila always went above and beyond the job description and truly made a difference in the lives of her students.

Sheila was the daughter of the late Andrew and Fahy Rutledge.  She was the mother of Wes Winburn and the Mamaw of Wyatt Winburn.  She is also survived by her brothers, John Rutledge of Crouse, Edgar Rutledge and wife, Helen of Vale, Sam Rutledge and wife, Monica of Gainesville, Fla. and her sister Ann Upton and husband, Donald of Lincolnton.  She also had many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly.  Sheila left behind a multitude of family and friends who loved her and will always miss her.

The family would like to thank Love Memorial Elementary School, The Outreach Class at Crouse United Methodist Church, Carolina Trust Bank, donors to the Special Fund for Sheila, the Hillbilly Beardsmen of Hickory, Dr. John Mahoney and his nurse Lisa, and all of the compassionate staff at Levine Cancer Institute, CMC-Lincoln and Catawba Regional Hospice.

Sona Mae Smith Sisk

Sona Mae Smith Sisk, age 79, of 5790 Summer Lane, Cherryville died Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Her funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Frady officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sisk was born in Catawba County on January 17, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Silas Monroe Smith and Ola Mae Josey Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Edmond Sisk, four children and one grandson.  She was a retired paper carrier for the Charlotte Observer.

Mrs. Sisk is survived by four daughters, Louise Steffey of Gaston County, Judy Johnson and husband, Johnny of Iron Station, Starleen Jackson and husband, Steve of Stanley and Sylvia Bradshaw and husband, Joey of Vale; two sons, Eugene “Hot Shot” Sisk and wife, Violet of Iron Station and Brett Sisk and wife, Kim of Cherryville; one brother, Johnny Smith and wife, Ada of Catawba County; one sister, Mattie Morgan of Catawba County; 26 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Howard

Dorothy Little Howard, 84, of Denver died January 10, 2014.

A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford with Rev. Ken Curtis officiating. The family received friends on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

William Joseph Rex

William Joseph Rex, 60, of Rices Landing, Pa. died January 9, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at Behm Funeral Home in Jefferson, Pa. with burial at Greene County Memorial Park, Jefferson, Pa.

Kathryn Elizabeth McSwain Foster

Kathryn Elizabeth McSwain Foster, 80, of Cherryville died January 10, 2014.

Funeral Services were held January 12, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Key officiating.  Burial was private.  The family received friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Vinnie M. Sowell Cauthen

Vinnie M. Sowell Cauthen, 85, of Lincolnton died January 10, 2014.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

 

Charlie C. Hubbard

Charlie C. Hubbard, 91, of Newton died January 10, 2014.

Services will be held January 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Good News Ministries formerly known as the Newton Pentecostal Holiness Church. The body will lie in state from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the church. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home in Maiden. The interment will be at Catawba Memorial Park. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 16 of Newton.

Sandra Fisher Sigmon

Sandra Fisher Sigmon, 71. of Conover died January 8, 2014.

A Memorial Service was held January 12, 2014 at 4 p.m. at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Conover. The family received friends January 12, 2014 from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at St. Peters Lutheran Church.

The Sigmon family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee.
