An eastern Lincoln County couple attempted to illegally gain funds by hiding pricey possessions in a house closet and reporting the items as stolen with both the Sheriff’s Office and an insurance agency, deputies said.
Scott and Rebecca Nazworth told officers on Nov. 30 that while they were in Memphis, Tenn., earlier that month, they had a number of belongings taken from their home including a safe filled with coin booklets, two diamond rings and $150 in cash along with additional items — a gaming system and tool set, according to an agency press release.
The 37-year-olds, residents of 194 Springwood Drive in Denver, also filed but later cancelled an insurance claim about the missing property through Liberty Mutual, deputies said.
Detectives learned of the alleged act on Dec. 4, eventually locating the “stolen” possessions stored in a closet at the residence, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Officers arrested the couple on Monday.
Scott Nazworth, charged with one felony count of insurance fraud conspiracy and one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report, has since posted a $3,000 secured bond.
Rebecca Nazworth, accused of felony conspiracy, was released on an unsecured bond, deputies said.
The belongings have since been placed into evidence at the county law enforcement agency.
Public Records revealed Rebecca Nazworth has a larceny conviction on her record from Mecklenburg County.
