The November meeting of the Priscilla Book Club was hosted by Peggy Lafferty. After a dessert course, members shared news. President Kay Barefoot opened the meeting with a recording by the Kruger Brothers about the Overmountain Men.
After the meeting’s business portion, Program Leader Judy Holland reviewed the book King’s Mountain by Sharyn McCrumb. Judy chose this book because her great, great, great-grandfather fought in the battle.
The book focuses attention on a group of Appalachian backwoodsmen and their contribution to victory. These untrained, poorly-equipped volunteer patriots traveled many miles on foot or horseback to meet and defeat the well-trained, well-equipped British army at the Battle of King’s Mountain. This book shares stories about day-to-day life for the families and volunteer soldiers. McCrumb’s book is bringing the Battle of King’s Mountain to the forefront as the turning point of the war.
President Barefoot closed the meeting by reading Rick Bragg’s “Fully Dressed” essay in the November Southern Living Magazine.
Suzanne Peeler will host the club’s December meeting; Becky Burke will be program leader.
