Jalyon Stockton hit a pair of free throws with 10.4 second left to give South Iredell the cushion it needed to knock off host North Lincoln 56-55 Friday in the North Piedmont 3A/4A Conference boys basketball opener for both teams.
Stockton’s free throws gave the Vikings (1-4, 1-0) a 56-53 lead. North Lincoln point guard Zach McGinnis missed a good look at a tying 3, but Chase Stehling was there for the putback.
The clock ran out seconds later.
South Iredell’s Tyzden Graham led all scorers with 19 points. Landon Yarbrough added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights, who dropped their league opener for the third straight year.
Chase Stehling added 11 points for North Lincoln, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.
The Knights (5-3, 0-1) led 14-7 with 6:20 to play in the first half, but South Iredell closed the half on a 16-6 run. It stretched its lead out to nine at 48-39 with 7:19 left to play when Stockton found Graham wide open for a 3.
North Lincoln used an 11-4 run to make it a three-point game at 53-50 with 1:29 left. From then on it was who could make its free throws, and that was the Vikings.
North Lincoln hit 13 of 26 from the line –– 5 for 15 in the fourth quarter. The Vikings hit just four of their 13 free throws in the final period, allowing the Knights to get back in.
Yarbrough fouled out with 2:41 to play.
CHERRYVILLE 80, WEST LINCOLN 49: At Cherryville, Rhyer Davis had a double-double of 16 points and 10 assists to lead four in double figures as the Ironmen stayed perfect on the year.
Kenny Posted scored 15 points, D.J. Cunningham added 11 points and Yung Sherrill scored 10 points for Cherryville (6-0).
Dylan Frady led West Lincoln (0-8) with 20 points.
WEST LINCOLN 41, CHERRYVILLE 29: At Cherryville, the Rebels held the Lady Ironmen to eight points in the first and third quarters combined in the non-conference win.
Erin Huff led West Lincoln (4-4) with 12 points, and Ashton Pena added 10. Molly Whitworth led Cherryville with a game-high 16 points.
The game was delayed roughly 45 minutes due to a power outage, Rebels coach Holly Specht said.
SOUTH IREDELL 59, NORTH LINCOLN 13: At North Lincoln, the Vikings had no trouble with the Knights in the teams’ conference opener.
Kaylee Johnson led South Iredell (4-2, 1-0) with 15 points and Lekia Hall added 10. Rachel Nuhfer had five points to pace North Lincoln (0-8, 0-1).
Cailee Franklin, the Knights’ leading scorer entering Friday’s game at 8.7 points per game, suffered a right arm injury in the first half and didn’t return. She spent the second half with it wrapped in ice.
