Local middle school student Cody Beam won four classes during the Appaloosa Registered Show and Youth Show this October. Beam also placed in several other categories over the two-day competition. More than 1,200 participants competed at the North Carolina Fair Horse Complex in Raleigh.
According to Beam, he has been competitively riding horses since he was 8 years old.
“I just really enjoy the competitiveness of it,” Beam said. “It’s fun to meet new people, and it’s fun to ride horses.”
Beam says he tries to train his horse several times a week, with each training session running two hours long.
“You’ve got to do a lot of work to prepare a horse — wash it, clip it, groom it,” Beam said.
Beam plans to return to the fair grounds for next year’s fall show.
“I just thank my Paw-Paw for standing behind me as well as my other family members for supporting me,” Beam said.
