Deputies shot and injured a 23-year-old Mecklenburg County man in eastern Lincoln County Thursday afternoon after the suspect, who tried to rob a local pharmacy earlier in the day, first fired two shots at officers, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Tyler Cameron Kennedy, of 10515 Paces Avenue, Apt. 1826, in Matthews, entered the CVS Pharmacy on Webb’s Road in Denver just before 3 p.m., jumped the pharmacy counter and demanded money, deputies said.

The suspect soon fled the property, and sped off in a gray Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Deputies pursued Kennedy as he traveled east down Webb’s Road, catching up with him on Burton Lane, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Both parties pulled over onto a grassy area on Lake Norman called Little Creek Access.

After Kennedy, wearing a bulletproof vest, exited his vehicle, he fired five shots, including two at officers, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies sent two shots in the suspect’s direction, striking and disabling the lower half of Kennedy’s body.

Emergency Medical Services transported the suspect to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. A Sheriff’s detective rode with EMS and Kennedy to the hospital.

The suspect remained at CMC-Main as of 9 p.m. Thursday, deputies said.

Kennedy faces one felony count of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer. Deputies said they might file additional charges against him in the future.

No money was stolen in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
