Woman charged with child abuse

Staff Writer

An eastern Lincoln County woman admitted to breaking her toddler’s leg because he refused to sit still during a diaper change, deputies said.
During a polygraph examination Monday with Sheriff’s Office detectives, Amanda Leighan Josey, of 4417 King Wilkinson Road in Denver, confessed to twisting her son’s leg until it broke, an agency press release said.
The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln in Lincolnton on Oct. 21 for treatment for a broken right femur, deputies said.
An X-ray revealed the child had a spiral mid-shaft fracture, the release said.
The victim’s parents initially told deputies in the hospital that the child broke his leg after running and falling down in a hallway in their house.
Deputies suggested a polygraph exam when parents offered different versions of the incident.
The Lincoln County Department of Social Services has since placed the child with his grandparents in Catawba County, the release said.
Josey faces one felony count of child abuse and has since been released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
Detective Kelly Paris filed the charge against Josey.
