3 locals qualify for state girls golf tourney


A trio of high school golfers finished among the top 17 individuals in their respective regionals on Monday to advance to next week’s NCHSAA girls golf championships.
Taylor Johnson of East Lincoln, Mary Prunier of North Lincoln and Ashton Anthony of West Lincoln will participate in the two-day state tournaments, which begin on Monday.
Johnson shot a 112 in 18 holes Monday at Linville Falls Golf Club to finish 12th overall in the 1A/2A West Regionals. Anthony shot a 115 to finish seven spots back.
Prunier shot a 90 and finished 12th in the 3A Central Regional at Meadowlands Golf Course in Winston-Salem.
The top three teams (and their top three finishers) plus the next 17 individuals advance from the regionals to the state championships.
The 2A championships will be held at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The 3A championships will be held at the Firefox Resort and Golf Club near Pinehurst.
Both tournaments are two-day, 36-hole events.


LINCOLNTON 2, BUNKER HILL 0: At Lincolnton, the Wolves picked up a Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference win on senior night.
Kevin Lopez and Adrian Leiva scored, both on rebounds.
The Wolves (10-1-2 SD-7) travel to West Caldwell today.
LINCOLN CHARTER 5, CHERRYVILLE 1: At Cherryville, the Eagles wrapped up their first winning season in school history with the Southern Piedmont 1A win.
Daniel Moore scored four goals and Caylon Nagy added a goal on a penalty kick. Cory Martin, Agusto Moron, Malakai Partridge and Ethan Cato had the assists. Keeper Isaiah Smith had six saves in goal as the Eagles outshot the Ironmen 24-15.
Lincoln Charter (12-8, 4-5) hosts Pine Lake Prep today.


CHINA GROVE CARSON 3, NORTH LINCOLN 0: At China Grove Carson, the Knights had their season end in the first round of the NCHSAA state 3A playoffs on Saturday 25-9, 25-12, 25-10.
Savannah Dishman has six kills, Chandler Keller had 11 assists and Olivia Loeffler had 12 digs for North Lincoln (14-11).


SD-7 ANNOUNCES ALL-CONFERENCE: The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference announced its all-conference teams for girls tennis.
Brielle Mattner of East Lincoln and Olivia Godfrey of West Lincoln made the team. No one from Lincolnton made it.
The conference player of the year was Cassidy Shell of Bandys. Its coach of the year was Jon Huffman of Maiden.


EL REMAINS SECOND IN AP POLL: The Mustangs held on to the second spot in this week’s Associated Press statewide 2A prep football poll.
East Lincoln (7-1) sits behind North Rowan (8-0) and are the only two teams to garner the top vote this season. North Rowan took No. 1 away from the Mustangs after their loss at Gastonia Forestview on Sept. 13.
Rounding out the top 10 were: Franklin (8-0), Winston-Salem Carver (7-1), Reidsville (6-2), High Point Andrews (6-1), Elizabeth City Northeastern (7-1), Maiden (8-0), Monroe (6-2) and South Columbus (6-2).
